Job Decription: Assists surgeon during operative and invasive procedures in the OperatingRoom for OB and Women's Health. Ensures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure. Monitors PAR level of all surgical instruments and Pain management supplies. Cleans and sterilizes all surgical instruments used in the OR and Pain Center. Participates in departmental staff meetings and performance improvement activities.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Prepares room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each individual surgical procedure, or all anticipated endoscopes, instruments, supplies and equipment of each individual GI Lab procedure.
Accurately completes operatingroom counts (instruments, sponges, sharps); follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to Circulating RN and surgeon and/or corrects immediately.
Maintains safe environment for patient, co-workers and self, per hospital policies and procedures
Checks all equipment/instruments needed, prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning. Equipment malfunctions or needed repairs are reported to the Charge Nurse and/or Materials coordinator.

What would you do in this role?
You'll be a vital part of the surgical team, ensuring operatingrooms are ready and procedures run smoothly. You'll prepare case carts, set up sterile fields, and assist surgeons by passing instruments and anticipating their needs during surgery. Responsibilities
· Prepare case carts for the next day's surgery schedule, following the surgeon's preference cards, noting on case cart if an item is missing and communicating with Materials Manager or supervisor;
· Anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure and holding retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon;
· Demonstrate the proper use of sterile technique and monitor for breaches in sterile technique;
· Perform proper handling and care of instruments, tray preparation and special procedure items, ensuring that the proper supplies, instruments and functioning equipment are available for the procedure;
· Inspect and perform maintenance on instruments and equipment for proper functioning, missing parts, and items in need of repair and report issues to Manager;
· Assist other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room and preparation of OR for next patient;
· Perform initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator;
· Assist the team members with gowning and gloving, draping the patient, and establishing the sterile field;
· Assist with decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispensed by the department following established infection control practices and initiate case carts for Surgical Services;
· Monitor use of and charge for all supplies used during procedure;
· Assist with inventory control by proper count of supplies used and store and restock shelves, carts and areas as needed;
· Assist in transferring patients from bed to stretcher and vice versa as needed;
· Non-Certified Surgical Technologists are required to complete 15 Continuing Education Units (CEU) per year and report those units to leadership.

The Trauma Technologist must be able to perform multiple procedures simultaneously or in secession. In addition the technologist is responsible for supplying the operatingroom with the proper equipment and instrumentation that's needed for specific surgery. During the procedure the primary responsibilities of the technologist is to maintain the sterility of the surgical field, to anticipate the needs of the surgeons, passing instruments in a timely fashion. Under direct supervision the technologist may be asked to perform the following duties such as, but no limited to: sponge or suction, hold retractors or instrument placed by the surgeons, applies electocautery to clamps on bleeders, irrigation to the operative sight, cuts suture material, connects drains to the suction apparatus, applies dressings to the wound. Once the procedure is completed it is the responsibility of the technologist to care for the instrumentation, equipment and prepare for the following case.
This position will provide any assistance needed to expedite the room turnover thereby, providing optimum customer service to the surgeon, patient, anesthesiologist, and co-workers.
Nature and Scope
This position serves a patient population of Neonatal, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric, Trauma, and Cardiac patients.
This position provides technical skills as a member of the surgical team, communicating with supervisors, other surgery staff, surgeons, and anesthesiologists.
The demands on this position are very dynamic because of rapid changes in medical procedures, high-risk procedures including Trauma and Open Heart Surgery's, technical knowledge, instrumentation, equipment, policies, procedure, and because of surgeon's preferences in equipment, instruments, needles, and sutures.
This position has the freedom to decide the type of equipment and supplies required for the surgical care of the patient relative to the surgeon's preference cards and knowledge of the procedure, and to identify any breakdown in aseptic technique and take appropriate action.
This position ensures equipment is working properly before surgical procedure, cares for equipment after procedure, and is responsible for reporting equipment that is not working properly or is broken.
It is common to encounter potential hazards in the healthcare environment. Some of these hazards could include, but are not limited to: radiation, toxic chemicals, biological hazards, heat, noise, dust and stress. Renown Health has a Safety Management Program in place that addresses the issues.
This position must be able to scrub all procedures in the Trauma O.R. This includes second scrub for Open Heart Services. This position is required to be able to take Trauma call and, when specifically trained, Heart call.
Other related duties, flexible hours, and overtime may be required.

Follows departmental policies and procedures for surgical counts, universal protocol, etc.
Supports the safe and effective provision of surgical services. Assists with patient positioning to maximize access to operative site while ensuring patient safety and comfort. Ensures surgical specimens are handled according policy. Performs surgical count with circulating nurse at specified timeframes. Safely transfers patient.
Assists with restocking of all carts, ORs and storage areas and maintains them in an orderly fashion. Stocks the ORs, sub-sterile rooms, anesthesia carts, and storage areas. Restocks the anesthesia machine, refills anesthetic gases, performs leak test. Restocks daily order in a timely fashion.
Inventories, restocks and distributes instruments, reusable medical equipment and medical supplies.

Ensures procedure logs for the sterilizers, Sterrad machine, and the Steris machines are -correct and accurate. Also make certain that the corresponding biological testing relating to these machines is accurate and complete.
Coordinates with surgery staff to acquire supplies in a timely manner.
Coordinates communications within the department. Answers telephones, routes callers, takes messages and provides routine information to callers. Utilizes the Fax Machine
Actively participates in Shared Governance.
Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to identify each patient's age-specific needs. Responsibilities

· Anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure and holding retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon;
· Demonstrate the proper use of sterile technique and monitor for breaches in sterile technique;
· Perform proper handling and care of instruments, tray preparation and special procedure items, ensuring that the proper supplies, instruments and functioning equipment are available for the procedure;
· Inspect and perform maintenance on instruments and equipment for proper functioning, missing parts, and items in need of repair and report issues to Manager;
· Assist other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room and preparation of OR for next patient;
· Perform initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator;
· Assist the team members with gowning and gloving, draping the patient, and establishing the sterile field;
· Assist with decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of supplies and equipment dispensed by the department following established infection control practices and initiate case carts for Surgical Services;
· Monitor use of and charge for all supplies used during procedure;
· Assist with inventory control by proper count of supplies used and store and restock shelves, carts and areas as needed;
· Assist in transferring patients from bed to stretcher and vice versa as needed;
· Non-Certified Surgical Technologists are required to complete 15 Continuing Education Units (CEU) per year and report those units to leadership.
