The Surgical Technologist will perform direct patient care within a busy orthopedic and spine surgery center. Duties to include but not be limited to:
- Perform scrub person duties during the intraoperative phase of surgical procedures
- Assist in the preparation and dispensing of instruments, equipment and supplies required for surgical procedures
- Conduct all instrument, needle, sharps and sponge counts, as well as handle specimens
- Assist in the application of dressings or casts and moving patients
- Assist in decontamination/reprocessing area when assigned
- Maintain inventory in Operating Room and on carts
Qualifications:
- Must be a graduate from an accredited Surgical Technician program or equivalent - WILL CONSIDER NEW GRADS

Position Summary
The OR Surgical Assistant will provide intraoperative, perioperative, and supporting services to Dr. Berger in orthopedic surgical cases across multiple offsite locations. The role requires frequent travel, flexibility, and ability to work seamlessly across different surgical facilities. The Surgical Assistant works under the direct supervision of the orthopedic surgeon, collaborating with operating room teams, anesthesia, nursing, and support staff to ensure safe, efficient, and high‑quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities & Duties:
Preoperative / Preparation
Review the surgical schedule in advance, obtain the case history, imaging, special instrumentation or implant needs
Coordinate with the surgical facility / hospital staff to ensure OR setup, sterile instruments, implants, and disposables are available
Assist with patient positioning, prepping, skin sterilization, and draping
Verify patient identity, operative site, and consent documentation in conjunction with surgeon
Maintain sterile field protocols and assist with gowning/gloving of surgical team
Intraoperative Assistance
Serve as the first or second assistant (as permitted by state/facility) - help retract, suction, maintain exposure, assist with instrumentation, suture / close layers, place drains or devices, apply dressings
Anticipate surgeon's needs, pass instruments, manage implants, and maintain operative efficiency
Monitor tissue handling, maintain hemostasis, assist with cautery, irrigation, and suction
Assist in the insertion, positioning, and securing of orthopedic fixation devices, grafts, screws, plates, etc.
Coordinate with scrub techs, circulators, anesthesia, and other OR staff
Assist during intraoperative imaging (fluoroscopy) and navigation if applicable
Document intraoperative events, counts, and implant usage as required
Postoperative / Turnover
Assist in applying final dressings, splints, or immobilization devices
Aid with patient transfer to recovery area (PACU)
Clean, decontaminate, and turnover the OR between cases as needed
Ensure surgical instruments and trays are properly handled, cleaned, and returned
Cross‑Site Logistics & Coordination
Liaise with facility staff, vendors, and implant reps to ensure appropriate setup
Manage scheduling logistics, travel time, and resource mobilization between sites
Communicate proactively about delays, equipment needs, or facility constraints
Assist in coordinating staff coverage or backup support across sites
Quality, Safety & Compliance
Adhere strictly to aseptic technique, sterile field integrity, infection control, and OR safety protocols
Participate in preoperative time-outs, surgical checklists, and site verification
Comply with facility, state, and federal regulatory requirements (e.g. OSHA, HIPAA, JCAHO)
Report adverse events, near misses, or safety issues promptly
Maintain professional continuing education, certification, and skills competency
Qualifications & Skills
Education / Training
Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program, or equivalent training (certified surgical technologist preferred)
Additional training or experience as a First Assistant / surgical assistant in orthopedic cases preferred
Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification; additional ACLS or specialty certifications a plus
Experience
Minimum 1-4 years of surgical assisting or scrub tech experience, ideally in orthopedic surgery
Experience with orthopedic instrumentation, implant systems, fixation hardware, and grafts
Prior exposure to multiple surgical facility settings or mobile/rotating OR assignments preferred
Competence in intraoperative imaging, navigation, or fluoroscopy assistance is a plus
Technical & Clinical Skills
Excellent manual dexterity, hand‑eye coordination, and instrument handling
Strong understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy, orthopedic techniques, and implant systems
Ability to anticipate surgeon needs and adapt to changing procedural demands

GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Operating Room Technician Certified reports to the Director, Surgical Services and assists in nursing care activities under the direction of a registered nurse and according to the policies and procedures of the department.
These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, in accordance with the mission, values and behaviors of Insight Hospital and Medical Center. Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Assists with planning and implementation of activities related to direct patient care:
* Assists in individual care plans by providing for the physical comfort, safety, and emotional welfare of the surgical patient.

Performs primarily in the role of scrub nurse to include:
* Prepares room, checks supplies and equipment for the patient.

* Assists in room clean up between surgical cases at the end of the schedule.

* Recognizes and acts appropriately in emergency situations.

Qualifications:

Department: Ctr for Comparative Medicine Salary/Grade: NEX/14 Maintains the operating room, performs minor surgeries, fluoroscopic procedures, and major surgery under the supervision of the veterinary staff or qualified laboratory personnel. Provides anesthetic and peri-operative support and monitors post-operative recovery of animals undergoing surgery. Maintains medical records for USDA covered species and maintains inventory of supplies to facilitate current and upcoming studies.
Please note: Must be able to lift 20 to 25 lbs. Must be able to work a shift schedule that includes working both Saturdays and Sundays, possibly a staggered work schedule, occasional overtime and holidays as required. Must be able to read, write, and comprehend English to read signage and to read and update animal health records. The workspace may be small, non-private and close to other workstations where the noise level can be high. This position requires the individual to be available to work on either the Chicago or Evanston campus as coverage needs dictate.
Must be enrolled in the university's occupational health program which entails filling out a health questionnaire. The health questionnaire is submitted to the university's occupational health provider for review. Must be willing to undergo job-related background check.

Specific Responsibilities:
Surgical Support
* Performs minor surgeries, vascular access procedures, fluoroscopic procedures and assists the clinical veterinarians or other qualified individuals with major surgical procedures. Prepares sterile instrument packs and prepares surgical suite for aseptic surgery. Administers anesthetic agents, intravenous fluids and monitors anesthesia and post-surgical recovery. Submits surgery billing statements to CCM business office on monthly basis for recharge to investigators (essential function for cost recovery).
Clinical Rounds
* Performs daily rounds to monitor postoperative and ongoing clinical cases. Communicates with veterinary staff and laboratory personnel to notify and update regarding the status of cases. Performs physical examinations, makes treatment recommendations, performs treatments and consults with clinical veterinarians regarding post-operative care.
Environmental Enrichment
* Assists in preparing and providing environmental and social enrichment to the laboratory animals following the enrichment program.
Colony Health Sentinel Program
* Performs necessary colony health management as required by the animal health program
Drugs, Supplies and Testing
* Dispenses and fills non-controlled drugs and supplies from the CCM pharmacy to laboratory personnel. Performs periodic inventories of drugs, supplies, assay kits and instruments with an emphasis on the surgical suite. Prepares and submits animals or specimens (blood, tissue, feces) for testing at diagnostic laboratories as determined necessary by the clinical veterinarians.
Teaching/Training
* Trains laboratory personnel, interns and AHTs in basic surgical techniques and asepsis. Trains laboratory personnel, interns and AHTs in technical procedures such as intravenous injections, blood collection, intubation, catheterization, etc.
Regulatory
* Remains current with all regulations pertaining to laboratory animals including the Guide, Animal Welfare Act, etc. Maintains technical familiarity with a wide range of clinical and experimental procedures for a variety of laboratory animal species. Participates in various staff meetings, staff training and continuing professional education. Becomes familiar with relevant Animal Study Protocols and meets with investigators and laboratory personnel to discuss research needs and animal health concerns.
Administrative
* Orders surgical supplies, completes anesthesia records, surgical reports and surgical recharge forms, tracks inventory, restocks the clinical areas, and performs other administrative tasks as required.
Miscellaneous
Performs other duties as assigned.

* Successful completion of a college level curriculum in veterinary technology requiring a minimum of two years of full-time academic study in a program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or completion of a 4-year degree in animal science, biology, veterinary science, zoology or related field.
* A combined 4-years' experience as a veterinary, animal health or surgical technician with at least 1-years' experience as an animal health or surgical technician in a laboratory animal research facility.
* AALAS certified ALAT or equivalent combination of relevant work or education experience.
* Excellent verbal and written communication.
* Must be able to type and have working knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing and e-mail software.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Prepares and maintains medical equipment for surgical procedures.
* Before an operation, surgical technologists elp prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions.
* Follows hospital regulations and industry procedures to tend to patient during pre-operation procedures.

Description:
We are seeking an experienced OR RN to provide perioperative nursing care, including patient assessment, circulating, and assisting in surgical procedures. Must be able to scrub and circulate a variety of surgical cases, maintain a sterile environment, and collaborate with surgeons and surgical techs.
This is a 12-hour shift role with possible weekend, holiday, and on-call requirements. Floating within surgical services may be expected. Compliance and onboarding take an average of 4-6 weeks.
