Job Requirements

Summary
The Surgical Technologist is responsible for planning, preparing, and maintaining surgical instrumentation and the surgical field peri-operatively. The Surgical Technologist also performs various related activities post-operatively in relation to room and instrument decontamination.

This position reports to the Nurse Manager, Operating Room and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
Essential Functions
-Provide emotional support to patients when appropriate.
-Perform surgical skin prep using principles of aseptic technique.
-Provide appropriate barriers when draping sterile field.
-Demonstrate knowledge of surgical procedures by anticipating needs and preparing equipment in advance.
-Demonstrate knowledge of surgical instruments and update surgical trays as necessary.
-Perform ongoing assessment of operative procedure.
-Determine deviations from the norm and provide for the indicated supplies and equipment.
-Under the direction of the surgeon, retract tissue, hold tissue, suction body fluids, and sponge and irrigate without harm to body tissue.
-Under the direction of the surgeon, cauterize bleeders if it is essential to the progress of the case.
-Communicate unusual occurrences at the sterile field to the circulating nurse.
-Safely assist in the moving and positioning of patients.
-Perform surgical counts in a safe and efficient manner.
-Ensure that appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment are assembled for procedures.

-Perform surgical hand scrub per CDHC policy.
-Use principles of aseptic technique in all aspects of job, including opening sterile supplies.

I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrates independent functioning and proficiency in the scrub role in all cases in assigned specialty on an ongoing basis. Remains constantly observant of the operative field, recognizing emergency situations and performs emergency procedures as directed. Utilizes a variety of OR equipment such as microscopes, CUSA, steam sterilizers, suction, compressed air/gas, etc.
5. Passes and tracks instruments, sutures, and supplies during procedures. Labels all medication and solutions on sterile field. Monitors sponges, needles and instruments throughout the case. Cares for specimens to prevent loss or damage. Uses caution when handling specimens to ensure proper anatomical identification.

Responsibilities:
The Security Officer/EMT is responsible for the physical security and safety of Ensign-Bickford Industries and Simsbury Dyno Nobel. This includes security enforcement, administering visitor and contractor access, vehicle control, emergency response, reporting and documenting incidents, CCTV monitoring and walking patrols.
Monitor alarms in Security Control and advise mobile unit via radio communications to respond to alarms (Cardkey, panel, facility). Determine appropriate response and make contacts to correct alarm conditions. Emergency responses, provide medical treatment as needed and assist in all other emergencies as directed by incident scene commanders.

Mobile patrols for employee safety, enforcement of parking restrictions; take corrective actions and report violations.
Maintain Security Department resources such as security control, vehicle, trailers and various equipment. Report deficiencies and re-supply as necessary.
Document incidents, visitors, contractors, alarms and responses using appropriate forms, both electronic and paper.
Requirements:
The successful candidate must have a High School Diploma/GED and a valid driver's license. An active EMT certification (Connecticut or National) is preferred, but candidates who do not currently hold certification are still encouraged to apply, provided they are willing to obtain EMT certification within one (1) year of hire.
