What skills stand out on operations research analyst resumes?

Dr. Jackie Gallagher

Associate Professor, Chair, University of Mary Washington

Students need to be able to communicate well, in writing and by speaking - I think these are the most important skills for anyone. It can be hard to demonstrate on a resume, so a portfolio or web page is incredibly useful! Beyond that, the ability to find good, reliable, information, to be able to do research, to think critically, and to assess information critically. Again, these are hard to demonstrate on a resume, but individual research, internships, presentations at a conference, these are the ways that a student might really stand out.
GIS skills are incredibly valuable for geography majors, but are not absolutely essential. One or two classes in GIS are useful; our undergraduate certificate, especially if it includes Python programming language, is very valuable.
Hard skills like word processing, use of spreadsheets, production of slide shows and posters, and creation of web pages round out my list!

What soft skills should all operations research analysts possess?

Pooyan Kazemian Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Operations, Case Western Reserve University

The most important soft skills, in my opinion, are communication skills and teamwork. OR Analysts often work as part of a team to solve real-world problems. Hence, working as part of a large team and communicating effectively with other team members is critical to the individual's and the team's success.

What hard/technical skills are most important for operations research analysts?

Pooyan Kazemian Ph.D.

Assistant Professor of Operations, Case Western Reserve University

It can vary based on the specific position/industry, but a working knowledge of mathematical modeling, optimization, statistical analysis, machine learning, and programming languages such as R and Python are fundamental technical skills needed for most OR Analyst positions.

What operations research analyst skills would you recommend for someone trying to advance their career?

Cheryl DorseyCheryl Dorsey LinkedIn profile

Lecturer, Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology

Regarding a gap year, I think if a graduate needs to, take a gap year. It would be beneficial to join professional organizations (many provide student discounts) and to participate in online trainings and webinars of interest to enhance skills.
