About this Position
Energy Services provides chilled water, steam, and potable water from three different industrial plants across campus, that is used for building heating and air conditioning, as well as domestic water use. Central Plant Operators are responsible for the uninterrupted production of chilled water and steam. Operators monitor and operate large equipment such as chillers, boilers, pumps, air compressors, and cooling towers, in a 24/7/365 operation.
Specific operator duties include:
Perform blow-downs, valve lineups, and oversee switches operating components. Operate fixed speed and variable speed pumps. Control operating parameters of high-pressure, high-energy systems utilizing manual, pneumatic, electronic, and computerized control systems. Coordinate machine operation between the Central Plant and the West Chilled Water plant.
Open and close valves to establish proper usage and loading of equipment. Monitor and adjust cooling towers, placing cells in service as needed to support running equipment as weather and load changes dictate. Assist other operators in the start-up and shut-down of other plant components during shift change. Follow established operating procedures to ensure all plant functions and capacities are normal. Monitor instrumentation and record readings as directed. Operate either centrifugal chillers or high-pressure power boilers as assigned. Assist in maintenance and repair of plant equipment Assist in laboratory analysis of Central Plant waters and add prescribed chemicals as needed to the various feed systems.
The Central Plant runs 24/7/365. The employee in this position is required to work an 8-hour rotating shift on weekdays and a 12-hour rotating shift on weekends, as assigned - including holidays and working overtime when needed.
The employee in this position must use appropriate personal protective equipment as required (hard hat, vest, gloves, safety glasses, etc.). These items are provided and are not for personal use.
Must work safely, adhere to all safety requirements, and promote a safe work environment.
Regular exposure to noise and possible exposure to chemicals and dust.
Physical requirements for routine activities include, but are not limited to, the ability to ascend and descend stairs or ladders, work at heights on elevated surfaces, work in confined spaces(occasionally), work in a stationary position for an extended period of time, and general stamina and agility.
This position may require manual labor and occasionally the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally.
This position is considered essential. Operators are expected and required to report to the plant for work even when the campus is closed.

Required Qualifications
High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
Central Plant Operator I - One year of work experience in a mechanical, electrical, or industrial plant operator trade.
Central Plant Operator II - Two years of work experience in the mechanical, electrical, or industrial plant operator trade.
Central Plant Operator III - Five years of work experience in the mechanical, electrical, or industrial plant operator trade.
Central Plant Operator IV - Seven years of work experience in the mechanical, electrical, or industrial plant operator trade.
One year or 600 hours of vocational/technical training in a mechanical or electrical field may substitute for one year of required experience.
Preference will be given to post-secondary education in mechanical, electrical, or industrial operations.
Candidate position placement is dependent upon years of experience and availability.
Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses:
Have a valid driver's license, which must be maintained during employment. A valid driver's license must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of job duties as assigned
Central Plant Operator I - Have or acquire within 12 months after hire a DOL Boiler or EPA Refrigerant Handler Type II certification.
Central Plant Operator II - Have upon hire a DOL Boiler or EPA Refrigerant Handler Type II certification.
Central Plant Operator III - Have upon hire a DOL Boiler or EPA Refrigerant Handler Type II certification and be qualified on both thermal systems (chillers and boilers) as recorded by success in fundamental and site-specific training modules and testing.
Central Plant Operator IV - Have upon hire a DOL Boiler and EPA Refrigerant Handler Type II certification and be qualified on both thermal systems (chillers and boilers) as recorded by success in fundamental and site-specific training modules and testing.

Must be able to follow directions as presented by the supervisor, be computer literate, be a positive team player, and be capable of working independently as directed in the performance of some routine duties.
Ability to become proficient in the use of “AiM” Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software and the use of mobile technology.

Basic Purpose
Positions in this job family are responsible for operating power equipment and performing related tasks in the maintenance and repair of highways.
Typical Functions
* Operates equipment or heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, bulldozers, front- end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi-trailers, snow removal equipment and other equipment as needed.
* Performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
* Repairs failures in the roadway shoulders or bridge decks.
* Repairs and/or replaces signs, posts, guardrails and fences.
* Provides traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag to direct highway traffic.

Level I

Special Requirements
Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver's license at time of employment.
Some agencies may require possession of a valid Oklahoma commercial driver's license, class A or B with appropriate endorsements referenced in United States Department of Transportation Title 47, Chapter 6, Section 101 et seq. at time of appointment. Persons appointed to positions at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation or the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority must possess or obtain a commercial driver's license, class A, no later than five months from the date of appointment. Position Responsibilities:
Read and follow written instructions and basic mechanical drawing specifications for equipment operations and changeover requirements.
Performs work by hand and with fixtures and machines, such as drilling, screwing, and bolting necessary to assembly work, disassembles as required. May perform operations such as sizing copper tubing to coil fin.
Monitor meters, gauges, valves, viscosity, temperatures, pressures, related controls and guidelines to ensure adherence to production/process specification.
Perform machine and quality checks as outlined in the work standards. Immediately report any out of specification product to the Team Leader or Operations Manager.
Account for machine scrap. Complete all required scrap tags and labels for scrap tracking. Process scrap as directed by the Team Leader or Operations Manager.
Report and assist maintenance crew in the repair, adjustments, and preventative maintenance.
Complete any required reports as directed by the Team Leader or Operations Manager.
Comply with all activities related to product safety, legality, regulatory compliance and quality.
Maintain a clean working environment and follow all safety guidelines and policies always. Report any unsafe conditions to the Team Leader or Operations Manager.
Maintain good communication with team members.
Verify use of correct materials by inspection and parts lists; identify and correct process and material defects.
Perform basic math calculations to maintain accurate counts of parts produced, adequate parts supply.
Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures.
Perform other duties as requested by the Team Leader or Operations Manager.
Position Qualifications Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent, preferred. Completion of some secondary/trade school technical and/or general business course is preferred.
Ability to follow written directions for proper changeover procedures. Understand and implement proper changeover procedures.
General sheet metal knowledge.
Some knowledge and experience in Quality Assurance.
Attention to detail.
Good math skills are preferred to interpret drawings and specifications.
Able to lift and/or move heavy objects/components, frequently up to 25lbs. and occasionally up to 50 lbs.
Ability to work in repetitive motions and pressure involving fingers, hands, and wrists.
Able to stand for prolonged periods on a concrete floor.
Able to walk, reach with hands and arms, push, pull, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
Must have demonstrated ability to communicate (speak, read, write) in English.
Able to work independently and with others.
Wear safety gear at all times.
Must be able to work overtime.
