Optimax Systems company history timeline

1991

Former Eastman Kodak employees launched Optimax in 1991 with an idea of building high-precision custom optics and optical components via “concurrent engineering” — or, as company president Mike Mandina has said, “To build prototypes while developing systems.”

Our story began in 1991, and like many success stories, Optimax was not built overnight.

1996

Optimax moved, first to an old cabbage factory building in Ontario and then in 1996 to its current site in an industrial park on Dean Parkway.

In 1996, Optimax corporate culture began to form, starting with Optimax official corporate uniform.

In 1996, Optimax expanded its workforce to 20 employees and its facility to 5,000 sq. ft.

2001

In 2001, Optimax acquired Gould Precision Optics.

In 2001, Optimax employed 80+ employees and expanded its facility to 40,000 sq. ft.

2006

In 2006, the process known as VIBE was conceived, tried, refined, and put into limited production and was awarded a United States Patent

2015

Registered: ISO 9001:2015 certified US Dept of State: Registered with Directorate of Defense Trade Controls

2016

Optimax celebrates 25 years in 2016, with 270 employees and continual growth

2018

On September 26th, 2018, Optimax’s Groundbreaking Ceremony marked the beginning of another facility expansion as part of Optimax’s continuing growth.

Rick Plympton and Mike Mandina inducted into the Rochester 2018 Business Hall of Fame.

2019

In 2019, Optimax doubled its size and added 60,000 sq. ft. to its current facility in Ontario, NY. In addition, more than 59 new jobs in the next five years as part of our dedication to growing our workforce.

2020

Plympton called the aerospace work “one of the funnest markets” and discussed Optimax’s involvement making optics for what NASA is calling the 2020 Rover, which is set to launch in 2020 and explore Mars.

In 2020, Optimax completed its expansion and doubled its facility size to 120,000 sq. ft in Ontario, NY. In addition, Optimax committed to adding 59+ new jobs in the next five years as part of our dedication to growing our workforce

2021

The year 2021 marks the 30th Anniversary of Optimax.
