ORC International company history timeline

1938

On October 26, 1938, for the purpose of applying the principles of general-public opinion polling to the marketing issues facing America's largest companies, Robinson founded and began to operate Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) in a two-room suite of New York City's Chrysler Building.

1939

In 1939, rapid increase of business and a growing staff necessitated the company's move to Princeton, New Jersey.

1941

ORC, one of the first organizations to conduct pre-election polling, completed its first political survey in 1941.

1942

1943

“A tabulating machine which does ‘everything but scramble eggs for breakfast' arrived last month to enable the school to make use of data from a series of public opinion polls donated to Williams in 1943 by Elmo Roper, head of the Roper Poll survey group.”***

To this end, in 1943 the company introduced the ORC Public Opinion Index which, for 40 years, included monthly surveys of how basic opinion trends affected business and commerce.

1945

In 1945, ORC initiated research on how consumers accepted new products and services and began biennial studies of how financial-security analysts evaluated industries and companies in the United States.

1947

From its establishment in 1947 to today, the Roper Center has played a key role in the development of the field of public opinion research.

1948

But Gallup didn’t always get it right - in 1948 he, like almost everyone else, predicted Harry S. Truman would lose to Thomas Dewey, but Truman won.

1957

In May 1957, what had been the Roper Collection at Williams officially became the Roper Public Opinion Research Center.

York Lucci, writing in a report for the Ford Foundation in 1957, noted that the equipment and personnel required by survey research methods was the equivalent of laboratory work in the physical sciences, but hardly any universities had appropriate resources.

1966

In 1966, work on optical fibres began at the University to try to make long-distance light communication a practical reality.

1968

In 1968, ORC expanded its services by opening offices in Canada and Mexico.

1985

Williams maintained a role in managing special projects at the Center, while Yale managed user services until 1985.

1986

In 1986, he furthered his vision of the Center as a major institution for the understanding of public opinion by establishing Public Perspective, for which he served as editor.

Also in 1986, POLL (Public Opinion Location Library) became a reality: a database where users could search, over a telephone line, most of the Roper Center’s US holdings by cross-indexing topics, keywords, organizations and dates.

1987

The paper Low-noise erbium-doped fibre amplifier operating at 1.54µm, Electronics Letters 1987 Volume23(19) pp.1026-1028, R.J.Mears, L.Reekie, I.M.Jauncey, D.N.Payne announced to the world the invention of the first practical optical amplifier.

1989

The ORC was formed in 1989, its history extends even further.

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) established the ORC in 1989 as an Interdisciplinary Research Centre.

1992

1992-97: Strategic Acquisitions and Organic Growth

1993

1993: ORC goes public and acquires London-based Gordon Simmons Research.

1994

Next, ORC's 1994 acquisition of Toledo-based Strategic Research and Consulting, Inc. gave it access to the United States auto industry; first-ever clients included General Motors, Chrysler Corporation, and Harley Davidson, Inc.

In 1994, ORC created two syndicated global-research products: CORPerceptions and BrandPerceptions.

1994: Company opens an office in Detroit and opens the European Information Centre in London.

1995

In 1995 the company opened ORC Asia as its Hong Kong-based headquarters on that continent; the company also built a new telephone-interviewing call center in Tucson, Ohio.

1997

For fiscal 1997, ORC's revenues reached $56.67 million and net income peaked at $1.15 million.

1998

According to Flaherty and Arnaldo's story in the December 13, 1998 issue of Equities, ORC also established longstanding relationships with affiliate companies in major markets around the world.

The 1998, purchase of Lansing, Illinois-based ProTel Marketing, Inc. (renamed ORC ProTel, Inc.) extended the company's core business into teleservices.

Net income rose to $2.42 million, compared to a loss of $170,000 in 1998.

1999

Internet-related revenues were $11 million, an increase of 57 percent compared to 1999.

2000

In response to a Fortune 1000 financial institution's contract for an Internet-based business panel, ORC developed an Internet B2B (business-to-business) panel, which it began to manage and maintain in February 2000.

2001

2001: Eurostat awards ORC a contract for social research projects throughout the European Union.

2012

Campbell has been the Curatorial Officer at the Museum since 2012 and has worked in the sector for almost a decade.

2015

In November 2015, the Roper Center moved to its new home at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, beginning a whole new chapter in the Center’s history of technological innovation, quality data curation, and robust support for social science research.

2019

In 2019, the Center released new Roper iPoll, a significant rebuild of the venerable iPOLL application, featuring over 800,000 questions and 23,000 datasets.

2022

In 2022, The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research is proud to celebrate its 75th anniversary.
