What is an order entry representative and how to become one

Updated January 8, 2025
3 min read

Order entry representatives take orders from customers and make sure that they get filled. They usually work for retail establishments or warehouses, anywhere where merchandise is stored before it goes out to customers. Order entry representatives need to be excellent verbal and written communicators. Customers may place orders over the phone or online, and the order entry representative needs to make sure that it is recorded correctly, no matter how complicated the order may be. Order entry representatives also need to be data whizzes--they enter order data and manage it using software such as Salesforce. They need to have a cool head under pressure in order to keep up when many orders pour in at the same time.

Only a few order entry representatives have bachelor's degrees. Practical experience in customer service or sales is far more important than a diploma. Order entry representatives usually need only one or two years of experience.

Order entry representatives earn an average of $28,223 a year. If they work hard, they can work their way up to an order specialist position and earn a higher salary as well.
