The unit's dual mission is primarily focused towards providing robust nursing services for inpatient acute care epilepsy diagnostic monitoring (EMU) and non-acute care inpatient/outpatient clinical translational research (CTRC) services. Acute Care (5A) and Family Medicine (5C) is a conceptually contiguous Family Medicine and General Medicine Acute Care unit with 14 beds on the Family Medicine unit and 23 beds on the Acute Care unit. The patient population is adults who have a variety of medical diagnoses such as Diabetes, End Stage Renal Disease, End Stage Liver Disease, Gastro-Intestinal Disorders, Adult Cystic Fibrosis, chronic and acute pain, infection, diagnostic testing, and psychiatric patients with a medical overlay. Patients require acute medical and nursing interventions such as intravenous fluids, nutritional support, pain management, antibiotics administration, diabetic management, respiratory care, remote telemetry, prepping for procedures, and education to optimize self-care. 5A/5C admits behavioral/psychiatric patients with medical issues that may have suicidal ideation or other behavioral risks that necessitate a court hold. 14C Medicine is a 31 bed acute care medicine unit. The 14C Medicine unit provides service to patient populations ages 18-100+ who have a variety of medical, acute care diagnoses and some cardiac conditions, such as atrial arrhythmias and NSTEMI cases. Patients require acute medical and nursing interventions such as intravenous fluids, tube feedings, pain management, respiratory care, including tracheostomy and stable ventilators, cystic fibrosis, antibiotics administration, diabetes management, heart failure care, endocarditis therapy, detox, behavioral and/or crisis management. Unit Vision: "We will provide exceptional care as a collaborative team that honors, respects and values our patients as well as each other" 14C is one of two units that admit psychiatric patients with medical issues which cannot be managed on the inpatient psychiatric unit (1NW). We are the Orthopedic and Spine Surgery unit as well as the Surgical Observation Unit for OHSU. Our primary patient populations include total knee and hip replacement patients, orthopedic oncology patients, spine surgery patients, and various other bone/joint patients who may be getting a revision, dealing with a fractured extremity, or a complication such as a non-union or infection. We also see a variety of observation/short stay patients who may be here for Urologic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, ENT, Emergency General Surgery, and Neurosurgery.
