The Division of Gastrointestinal and General Surgery is a comprehensive team of surgeons focused on the areas of colorectal surgery, esophageal surgery, hernia surgery, treatment of pancreatic cancer and surgical nutrition. Our general surgeons support numerous clinical research trials and actively partner with scientists in the community to develop innovative surgical devices. The general surgery division also encompasses one of the largest residency programs in the country, as well as fellowships in minimally invasive surgery and colorectal surgery.
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a faculty member credentialed and privileged as a PhysicianAssistant (PA) or an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN). The APP is a member of the OHSU Professional Staff practicing in accordance with the respective bylaws. The APP shall provide services as assigned by the supervisor in furtherance of the university?s missions and goals of teaching, research, patient care, outreach and public service. The APP is expected to comply with scope of practice, other laws, regulations, OHSU policy, and other applicable professional standards of practice.
Function/Duties of Position:
Clinical Responsibilities
Inpatient Responsibilities:
Providing inpatient care and follow-up of assigned surgical patients from the operating room (OR) to admission, and through discharge. Includes, but is not limited to: rounding on a daily basis with the faculty, developing and implementing, in conjunction with faculty physicians, clinical plans of care and/or protocols for inpatients on the General Surgery-Hernia/Abdominal Wall service with common conditions/diagnoses/procedures; educating the house staff and nursing unit staff on these protocols, with the goal of enhancing quality of care, enhancing quality of patient services, and decreasing length of inpatient stay; participating with hospital/unit staff in evaluating results of these protocols and continually improving effectiveness of same; working actively with hospital and unit staff to rapidly develop and implement discharge plans for inpatients on the General Surgery-Hernia/Abdominal Wall service and to address length of stay issues; promoting and maintaining health of inpatients on the General Surgery
-Hernia/Abdominal Wall service through the use of ancillary services, educational materials, and counseling of patients and families; providing resident and intern training/education in utilization of plans of care to improve patient services and outcomes of treatment; providing and/or participating in clinical in-service training and staff educational programs for the inpatient service.
Procedural duties include, but are not limited to: wound care (dressing changes, debridement, washout), stoma-related services, IV & other line placement, catheter or enteral tube placement and/or exchange, drain management, other.
Appropriate billing for various inpatient duties, as outlined above. Following all patient care standards, as outlined above.
Operating Room Responsibilities -Assistant Duties
For APP designated with OR responsibilities: Provide operating room and procedural assistance to General Surgery-Hernia/Abdominal Wall surgeons as determined by the Division Head or their designee(s). Includes assistance in performing a variety of general surgery procedures, with a focus on hernia repair and abdominal wall reconstructive procedures, among other surgical procedures, various suturing, wound closure, dressing application, postoperative monitoring, postoperative orders and discharge.
Appropriate billing for various operating room duties, as outlined above.
Outpatient
Providing patient care in the outpatient setting for preoperative and postoperative care, wound care, unscheduled visits, and chronic follow-up as determined by the faculty. This includes but is not limited to: developing patient care plans with the faculty and house staff to ensure continuity of care and enhance quality of outpatient care. Training and supervision of General Surgery-Hernia/Abdominal Wall clinic team staff, house staff and medical students.
Promoting and maintaining health using ancillary services, educational materials, and counseling of patients and families as outpatients; providing same day response to medical advice/prescription phone requests and coordinating patient services with outpatient patient care staff and other departmental advanced care providers. Promoting a safe environment and adhering to policies and confidentiality to support the mission and goals of OHSU.
Recognizing clinical emergencies or urgent situations and acting autonomously, efficiently, and effectively to provide situational resuscitation and/or treatment. Assessing patients for outpatient clinic visits, determining medical necessity of visit and ensuring a course of action based on department and OHSU policies and/or in collaboration with the faculty. Utilizing resources and educational materials for patients and families; consulting with the faculty to provide up-to-date condition-specific health care information for outpatients. This includes prompt and professional communication, face-to-face customer contact skills, crisis management, use of available information technology, standard complaint processing, flexibility in coverage of internal service needs, and continuous application of process improvement methods and skills.
Procedural duties include but are not limited to: wound care (dressing changes, debridement, washout), stoma-related services, drain management & removal, Foley catheter or enteral tube placement and/or exchange, other.
Appropriate billing for various outpatient duties, as outlined above.
Required Qualifications:
Master?s Degree as required by specific Advanced Practice Provider role.
Minimum two years clinical experience, including wound care experience.
Current BLS Certification (ACLS a plus)
Registration with the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners as a licensed PhysicianAssistant, or a Nurse Practitioner license from the Oregon Board of Nursing; Drug Enforcement Association certification required.

**PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES**

$10,000 Sign-on Bonus for eligible new part-time and full-time employees joining UW Medicine Harborview Medical Center has an outstanding opportunity for APP (Nurse Practitioner or PhysicianAssistant). WORK SCHEDULE * 90% FTE (36 hours per week), Days, 12 hour shifts (and including some nights, week-ends and holidays).
Supervision:
The APP (Advanced Practice Provider), ARNP or PA, will work under the supervision of the Attending Physician on service and work collaboratively with physicians in post-graduate training programs (i.e. residents and fellows in Internal Medicine and Critical Care Medicine)
Patient population:
Critically ill patients with complex medical, surgical or neurological problems. Typical issues may include respiratory failure, ARDS (including extracorporeal life support), sepsis, cardiac arrest and complications of chronic medical conditions.
Responsibilities to include:
(Note: responsibilities may evolve over time depending on the needs of the service, demand in other critical care services and outreach roles)
1. Patient Care:
* Admit new patients (e.g. write admission note, develop initial assessments/plans, place admission orders in EMR)
* Provide frontline coverage for admitted patients (e.g. "cross-cover" / manage patients admitted by other providers; either daytime or nighttime)
* Participate in daily morning and afternoon rounds (e.g. present updated clinical information and problem-based plan of care on multidisciplinary ICU rounds, share tasks with other members of ICU team such as completion of daily rounding checklist, entering orders in EMR, documenting, etc.)
* Daily management of ICU patients (e.g. evaluate and manage ICU patients, write daily progress notes, formulate and implement plans of care, communicate with consultants, update family/caregiver daily, work collaboratively with other members of multidisciplinary team including physicians in training)
* Facilitate transitions of care to other service lines (e.g. documentation and direct hand-off for discharge from ICU to Acute Care, skilled nursing facility, surgical/anesthesia services for OR cases)
* Participate in family meetings and discussions of goals of care as member of critical care team
* Participate with team in critical care outreach activities for patients on Acute Care, Emergency Department or other ICU services depending on clinical need (e.g. responding to "Code Blue", Rapid Responses, support other ICU services with high clinical loads)
* Potential to work in other ICUs within HMC depending on clinical need (e.g. Neurocritical Care)
2. Procedures
* Assist or perform bedside procedures for hospitalized patients (e.g. central venous catheters, arterial lines, thoracentesis, paracentesis, lumbar puncture, point of care ultrasound, etc.) under the direction and supervision of the attending physician.
* Procedures may be referred from Medical ICU patients or patients on other clinical units (e.g. Hospital Medicine, Surgical services)
3. Quality Improvement, Research and Scholarship
* APPs are expected to be active participants in research, QI projects and regular QI meetings
o Ideally participation involves contributing to (or initiating) projects that leverage existing resources and ongoing initiatives that will result in measurable improvements in processes of care and/or scholarly output (e.g. presentation, publication, etc.)
o Mentorship is available from faculty and staff
* Attendance and participation in educational conferences

* Masters or Doctorate Degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing
* AND Washington State Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner License with prescriptive privileges
* AND National certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
* PhysicianAssistant:
* Licensure as a Physician's Assistant in the State of Washington
* AND national certification from a national certifying body (NCCPA)
* BLS/ACLS certification required

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The Neurological Surgery Clinic at UW Medical Center-Montlake is an international leader and pioneer in the care and treatment of patients with diseases and disorders of the brain, spine and peripheral nerves. We take a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to complex neurosurgical problems such as tumors, degenerative disease, vascular lesions, epilepsy, spinal anomalies, peripheral nerve disorders, chronic pain and spasticity, movement disorders and developmental defects. Our patients receive uncompromising care in one of the most advanced facilities in the world.
POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
Provide neurosurgical services in an inpatient setting
Work alongside attending physicians, fellows, and residents across the Neurological Surgery continuum of care
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Inpatient Responsibilities
Participates in daily morning and afternoon rounds
Provides daily care, which includes evaluating and managing patients, writing daily progress notes, and formulating/implementing plans
Coordinates patient care with other services (endocrinology, internal medicine, neurology, ENT, ID)
May perform the following procedures: lumbar punctures, drain removal (Subgaleal, JP, Hemovac), external ventricular drain placement and removal, lumbar drain placement and removal, shunt/Ommaya tapping, nasal endoscopy
Additional Responsibilities
Attends monthly Quality Improvement (QI) meetings and participates in ongoing QI research and projects
Partakes in monthly case presentations and journal clubs that are led by the APP with Physician support
Provides clinical mentoring to APP students and interns
Attends team educational conferences (M&M, surgical grand rounds, tumor boards)
REQUIREMENTS
Current and valid Washington State ARNP licensure or PhysicianAssistant licensure
Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program or an accredited PhysicianAssistant Program
DEA prescriptive authority
BLS
ACLS
Previous neurosurgery experience preferred

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Evaluates survivors' needs (physical, psychological, and social) using assessment tools such as distress screening to connect patients to referrals and support services, such as dietitians, social work, physical therapy.
Provides psychosocial support and facilitates referrals to psychology services as needed.
Adheres to NCCN survivorship clinical guidelines and other evidence-based practices.
Collaborates with the Survivorship Program Team to curate and develop educational materials for survivors.
Provides direct patient care to include obtaining patient history, performing patient assessment via observation, interview and examination; orders, performs and interprets diagnostic studies; performs preventative health assessments, screenings, immunizations and care; provides direct treatment and management of acute and chronic disease conditions; develops and implements patient-centered plan of care in collaboration with physicians, patients, consultants, nurses, ancillary care providers and others as appropriate to the patient's condition.

Champions the safety and quality of care for patients using ITB therapy and serves as an expert in the care and management of ITB pumps. Helps develop a detailed educational program for the patients and lead the quality and safety initiative for the program.
Serves as clinical expert regarding rehabilitation nursing while demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill in complex clinical nursing situations.
Provides management services for clinical research study projects; monitors participating subjects, including medication administration and family/patient education.
Works in accordance with established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, and safety, environmental and infection control standards.
Regularly participates in constant quality improvement and process improvement activities centered on the goal of providing exceptional, evidence-based patient care.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
Provide neurosurgical services in outpatient and inpatient settings
Work alongside attending physicians, fellows, and residents across the Neurological Surgery continuum of care
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Outpatient Responsibilities
Provides pre-surgical care, which includes surgical clearance, H&P, and coordination of care with anesthesia, medicine, and inpatient team for complex cases
Provides post-operative care, which includes post-operative clinic visits, medication management, pathology follow-up, and coordination of care with consult services
Triages patient messages and implements a plan of care
Interprets lab and diagnostic tests results and consults with attending physician
Inpatient Responsibilities
Participates in daily morning and afternoon rounds
Provides daily care, which includes evaluating and managing patients, writing daily progress notes, and formulating/implementing plans
Coordinates patient care with other services (endocrinology, internal medicine, neurology, ENT, ID)
May perform the following procedures: lumbar punctures, drain removal (Subgaleal, JP, Hemovac), external ventricular drain placement and removal, lumbar drain placement and removal, shunt/Ommaya tapping, nasal endoscopy
Additional Responsibilities
Partakes in monthly case presentations and journal clubs that are led by the APP with Physician support
Provides clinical mentoring to APP students and interns
Attends team educational conferences (M&M, surgical grand rounds, tumor boards)

We are recruiting a full-time physicianassistant at the faculty rank of Teaching Associate to join our hand and upper extremity service. Our PhysicianAssistant (PA) will work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team that in addition to orthopaedic surgeons may include plastic surgeons, primary care and rehabilitation medicine physicians, occupational therapists, as well as orthopaedic residents and fellows. Our PAs are responsible for providing comprehensive orthopaedic care to patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. PAs with experience in orthopaedic care are preferred but we can train motivated and talented individuals. The position is on an annual appointment with a 12-month service period (July 1-June 30). Faculty with 12-month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12-month period (July-June), meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off. This position has a flexible start date in winter 2026.
Salary:
The base salary range for this position will be: $10,000 - $14,850 per month ($120,000-178,200 annually) commensurate with qualifications and years of experience as a physicianassistant, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. Please note that only compensation provided by the University is included in University benefit determinations and calculations.
