Staff scientist job at Oregon Health & Science University
Center Overview: The Cancer Early Detection Advanced Research (CEDAR) center is a collaborative institution within the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute. The Knight Cancer Institute, known as one of the pioneers in personalized cancer medicine, is an international leader in research and cancer treatment. At CEDAR our mission is to detect and stop lethal cancers at the earliest stage because early detection saves lives. This is an ambitious goal, one that requires novelty, creativity, and innovation. We are comprised of biologists, chemists, biomedical engineers, computationalists, and clinicians conducting groundbreaking translational cancer research to help people maintain a high quality of life and reduce cancer mortality, to create a global early detection community, and to have a positive impact on the Oregon economy.
Our Commitment to Diversity: CEDAR is committed to increasing the diversity of the campus community. We are dedicated to promoting inclusion and multiculturalism by having outstanding researchers of diverse backgrounds work together on multiple projects. We encourage high-risk, high-reward research projects because defeating cancer requires out-of-the-box thinking and new perspectives. Our research is milestone driven to ensure that each project is fulfilling its stated goals.
Every Knight Cancer employee is expected to embody our guiding principles:
We act BOLDLY-Breakthroughs require pushing the boundaries of science, exploring new frontiers, and thinking differently
We SUPPORT each other-Respect leads to trust, which leads to excellence
We work as a CONNECTED team-We must leverage our collective brain power to conquer cancer because no one individual can do it alone
Function/Duties of Position
This is an NIH grant funded position with Dr. Stuart Ibsen. We are developing an exciting new type of cancer diagnostic test that combines microfluidic and microarray technology to pull cancer-derived nanoparticles straight from plasma. Our long-term goal is to bring nanoparticle-based diagnostics to the clinic for the first time. We are currently hiring for 1-2 highly motivated and enthusiastic researchers with expertise in Engineering or Biology to work in some of the following general areas:
Development of biological particle separation techniques using dielectrophoresis technology - using microelectrode array chips to recover cancer-derived nanoparticles from circulation (Gustafson,
et al.
2021). This novel work will focus on the development and characterization of new nanoparticle recovery techniques using dielectrophoretic forces. These forces are created by microelectrode array devices that act on the unique dielectric properties of different particles (Ibsen
et al.
2017). This work includes increasing particle collection efficiency, understanding the types of particles that are collected and how they can be separated, and developing an internal standard appropriate for different particle types. This position will utilize the high-end specialized dielectrophoresis equipment located here at OHSU. This will also involve quantitative fluorescent microscopy imaging, TEM imaging, immunostaining, and particle characterization.
System automation - continuing development and finalization of an automated system to conduct the dielectrophoresis work. The goal is to automate the dielectrophoresis collection protocol to increase sample analysis throughput. This will involve basic robotics and automation programming in LabView.
Cancer biomarker panel development - evaluate the nanoparticle associated biomarkers that are collected for their ability to detect pancreatic cancer from plasma samples. Here the goal is to use the developed dielectrophoresis techniques to collect cancer-derived nanoparticles and evaluate their biomarkers for the ability to detect pancreatic cancer.

Scheduled Hours40The Cremins lab works at the spatial biology-technology interface to understand chromatin-to-synapse communication during neural circuit activation in the mammalian brain. We aim to understand how chromatin works through long-range physical folding mechanisms to encode neuronal specification and long-term synaptic plasticity in healthy and diseased neural circuits. We pursue a multi-disciplinary approach integrating data across biological scales in the brain, including molecular Chromosome-Conformation-Capture sequencing technologies, single-cell imaging, optogenetics, genome engineering, induced pluripotent stem cell differentiation to neurons/organoids, and in vitro and in vivo electrophysiological measurements.
Our long-term scientific goal is to dissect the fundamental mechanisms by which chromatin architecture causally governs genome function and, ultimately, long-term synaptic plasticity and neural circuit features in healthy mammalian brains as well as during the onset and progression of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disease states.
Our long-term mentorship goal is to develop a diverse cohort of next-generation scientists cross-trained in molecular and computational approaches. We seek to create a positive, high-energy environment with open and honest communication to empower individuals to discover and refine their purpose and grow into the best versions of themselves.
The candidate will work with a dynamic team of graduate students to develop new code and statistical methods to analyze newly created data in the Cremins lab to map the neural connectome at synapse resolution. Imaging data includes in situ sequencing signals procured across hundreds of fields of view. Pipelines to be developed will focus on base calling of nucleotides, cell segmentation, registration of spots across cycles, drift correction, and assembly of barcode counts files, and the interpretation of barcodes as a given neuron in specific x, y, z coordinates. Candidates will be expected to organize, manage, and curate the imaging data to make it available to the scientific community on public portals. All code should be written by PEP8 standards and of quality to provide it freely available to the community via bitbucket.
This role is ideal for you if you have a strong interest and motivation toward working with new data never produced or analyzed before, and thrive in a fast paced environment discovering new answers. Candidates will independently search the published literature and available code to develop a portfolio of novel computational tools for processing multi-modal imaging data. The candidate will contribute to the preparation of multiple manuscripts, including making figures and writing methods and results. This role is ideal for you if you enjoy the excitement of a bleeding-edge scientific laboratory and welcome the challenge of a fast-paced environment and working collaboratively in a positive, warm, and community-focused scientific culture.Job Description

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION The Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine department strives to deliver the highest quality of professional education and training, and conduct cutting edge research in the areas of biochemistry, molecular genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics with a goal to better understand human disease. Additionally, the department continues to have a long and successful record in training undergraduate, master's, and graduate students at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
There is an immediate opening for a Research Scientist position in Dr. Huimin Yu's laboratory. Dr. Yu's research focuses on the pathological significance of the impaired gut-fat axis in IBD. Using mouse models, human intestinal organoids, and adipose stem cell culture, she has been investigating the molecular crosstalk between intestinal inflammation and mesenteric fat in IBD, including the role of so-called "creeping fat" in Crohn's disease. Her recently published findings suggest a phenotypic and mechanistic causal relationship between a novel adipokine and intestinal inflammation. She hopes that her work in this area will facilitate the development of novel, adipose tissue-based IBD therapies.
