**Summary:**

Review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and design programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical & biological agents. Support implementation of an ISO 14001 Environmental Management; ISO 45001 Safety Management and ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems. Provide direct support in handling of hazardous materials. Provide direct support to O&M and Federal Environmental Offices in maintaining NYSDEC permits and complying with applicable regulations. Conduct inspections in order to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations. Collect data on work environments for analysis by occupational health and safety specialists. Implement and conduct evaluation of programs designed to limit chemical, physical, biological risks to workers. Maintain all required records and documentation. Report the results of environmental contaminant analyses, and recommend corrective measures to be applied.

**Roles/Responsibilities:**

+ Ensure appropriate waste management procedures implemented and followed.

+ Provide instruction on correct work practices in relation to chemical storage and/or use and other duties specified by your supervisor.

+ Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo.

+ Knowledge of rules & safety regulations of the laboratory chemicals and other hazardous materials.

* Establishes goals and evaluates projects, proposed or conducted by the various laboratory sections; approves, disapproves or suggests modifications of each major project.
* Acts as a scientific advisor to both the FADDL Director and NVSL Director and assists Section Heads in planning projects and solving technical problems.
* Provides leadership in establishing quality assurance and maintaining ISO 17025 accreditation.
* Provides leadership in development of new procedures and laboratory techniques to improve diagnostic methods for disease of livestock at FADDL and in the NAHLN.
* Review diagnostic reagent production, standardization, and maintenance and distribution procedures .
* Takes part in foreign animal disease training.
