Orono company history timeline

1889

The separate Township of Orono was created out of the southern half of Medina on April 9, 1889.

1897

The name was changed to the University of Maine in 1897.

1906

Long Lake was incorporated from Orono Township in 1906.

1937

In 1937 Roy A. Forrester started the Orono Weekly Times at this location.

1947

Mary Waddell, born in Orono, was the first woman appointed to the mathematics staff where she remained until 1947.

In 1947, Doctor McElroy became a Fellow in Orthopaedics at Lahey Clinic in Boston.

1952

Long Lake expanded, Wayzata grew westward, and then Spring Park was incorporated in 1952.

1955

Finally, effective January 1, 1955, Orono Village was incorporated encompassing all the remaining parts of the township including the settlements of Navarre, Crystal Bay, Orono and Bederwood (Stubbs Bay).

1968

Born and raised in Oshawa, Jim and his wife Sherri moved to Orono in 1968.

1992

After his death on Feb 15, 1992 his family and the community created this Woods Walk to honour his memory.

1997

First Do No Harm (1997 – TV movie), Jim Abrahams, starring Meryl Streep,

2000

The Orono Bog Boardwalk Project was initiated in the year 2000 by Professor Ronald B. Davis of Orono and the University of Maine.

2002

Construction began in 2002 after two years of planning, fund raising, permit application, and organization of an administrative structure for the project.

2003

Construction was completed in spring 2003, and the boardwalk opened in June of that year.

2008

Effective March, 2008, UMaine science librarian Jim Bird, Department Head, Science & Engineering Center, Fogler Library, was appointed Director of the boardwalk.

2013

Bickell played with the Blackhawks for 10 years during which he recorded the game-tying goal during Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final 2013.

2015

He also played in the 2015 Stanley Cup Playoffs which the Blackhawks won.

2020

The Church was sold in 2020 to Masjid Alwadood Orono Mosque.
