Thanks to the generous support of the Mid-South community, $5 million was raised to repair the building and restore it to its 1928 opulence, while also making it more accessible for modern performers and audiences.
The “new” Orpheum was built in 1928 as a vaudeville theater after fire destroyed the original building.
“When [Malco founder] Michael Lightman was looking for a flagship theater for his chain, he bought it in 1940, and it became a pure, single-screen, big, downtown movie theater,” says current Orpheum CEO Brett Batterson.
When Malco prepared to sell the building in 1975, the most interested group was the Jehovah’s Witnesses, which prompted another local group to consider the theater as well.
M.A. Lightman purchased the Orpheum for just $75,000 and the theatre became the Malco, presenting first-run movies on its big screen until 1976.
In 1997, the back wall was blown out to make way for Broadway-sized sets.
In 2002, Omaha Performing Arts Society assumed management of the Orpheum Theater from the City of Omaha, and the Orpheum underwent a $10 million renovation, making it capable of accommodating larger and more complicated scenery and sets.
The Skylink was added in 2004 for increased convenience and accessibility to the theater.
The Halloran Center next door was completed in 2015 to provide a smaller performance space and increased room for educational programs and events.
During the summer of 2017, the theatre received a $3 million update, including paint, new carpeting and a refresh of seating.
