Auto-Apply2026 Summer Intern - Bioanalytical Sciences
South San Francisco, CA jobs
2026 Summer Intern - Bioanalytical Sciences We are seeking a highly motivated student to join the BioAnalytical Sciences (BAS) department within Development Sciences for a summer internship. The BioAnalytical Sciences Department at Genentech is a world-class bioanalytical center of excellence for novel strategies, technologies, and methods that enable the development of life-changing medicines. We do this by fostering an innovative and collaborative environment that values and recognizes diversity of contributions. The Cell Biology division focuses on investigating the mechanism of action of biotherapeutics through cell-based assays such as cellular internalization and processing, high content imaging, and real-time cell growth/survival monitoring. Your work will consist in the development of cell-based assays and will utilize cell culture, flow cytometry, and other immunology related methods.
This internship position is located in South San Francisco, on-site.
The Opportunity
Project background:
Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cells are engineered T cells with promising potential to provide curative treatment for hematologic malignancies. However, due to the highly personalized manufacturing process and extremely high treatment cost, only ~20% of eligible patients currently have access to autologous CAR-T therapies. Allogeneic CAR-T cell products offer an "off-the-shelf" alternative that has the potential to improve treatment accessibility. However, most current allogeneic CAR-T therapies exhibit limited persistence in patients and therefore do not achieve the durable responses observed with autologous CAR-T cells. This reduced persistence is likely due to immunologic rejection of the allogeneic CAR-T cells by the host immune system. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of host immune rejection is essential to guide the development of next-generation allogeneic CAR-T cell designs that can evade immune clearance and achieve durable persistence in patients.
Key Responsibilities:
We have established an in vitro assay to monitor the rejection or killing of CAR-T cells by host immune cells. To better understand the cellular drivers of allogeneic CAR-T cell rejection, we will further characterize this assay to determine the relative contributions of T cells and natural killer (NK) cells in mediating CAR-T cell clearance. We will want to:
* Determine whether T cell-depleted patient-derived PBMCs can still mediate CAR-T cell killing.
* Determine whether NK cell-depleted patient-derived PBMCs can still mediate CAR-T cell killing.
* Quantify the CAR-T cell killing activity of T cell- and NK cell-depleted PBMCs compared with undepleted PBMCs.
Program Highlights:
* Intensive 12-weeks, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship.
* Program start dates are in May/June 2026.
* A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship.
* Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

* Final presentations of project work to senior leaders.
* Professional & personal development curriculum throughout the program, including networking opportunities, workshops, and panel discussions.
* Participate in volunteer projects, social events, and team-building activities.
