Otterbein University company history timeline

1847

Otterbein University was founded in 1847 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ.

1859

In 1859, Otterbein enrolled its first African-American student, William Hannibal Thomas, but he was beaten and taunted by white students.

1944

In one response letter to Bruce Brockett in September 1944, President Howe said this,

1945

Unfortunately, due to a rift between President Howe and board members over the financial crisis they were facing he resigned on January 5, 1945.11

As a result of a division and two mergers involving the church, the university has since 1968 been associated with the United Methodist Church.

1969

In January 1969 the Otterbein students worked to create a giant Valentine to be sent to Vietnam soldiers.21 They signed the valentine to demonstrate their support and raised funds to send candy with the Valentine.

2014

In 2014, the University governance system voted to create an independent Student Government, to reflect the changing needs of students.
