Our Community CU company history timeline

1954

UIECU’s assets and membership continued to grow, and in 1954 Glen Pickens took a leave from the University to become the first full time employee of the credit union.

1965

In 1965, they became a state chartered credit union and changed the name to COPOCO Credit Union.

1970

The first merger occurred in the mid 1970’s with Bay Farm Bureau Federal Credit Union.

1977

Dorothy served the credit union until she retired in 1977.

2000

On May 22, 2000, the credit union expanded again by changing our name to Midland Community Federal Credit Union and opening our membership base for all who live, work, worship or attend school in Midland County, Texas.

UIECU began offering online banking in 2000, enabling members across the country and around the world to easily access and manage their accounts.

2002

On June 1, 2002, the Credit Union changed the name to COPOCO Community Credit Union.

In 2002, Self-Help established the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) to build on initial successes and expand our focus nationally and to tackle practices such as payday lending in addition to mortgage lending.

2010

In 2010, OCCU expanded it’s field of membership to include all residents in the state of Washington.

2012

In 2012, Self-Help acquired Second Federal S&L and continued service to 14,000 predominantly Latino depositors and borrowers.

2013

To serve our membership more efficiently in the Great Lakes Bay Region, COPOCO CCU built and opened a third branch January 2, 2013.

2014

In one recent example, a 2014 merger with Generations Community Credit Union helped to preserve and expand services for predominantly African-American communities in eastern and central NC.

2016

In 2016 Self-Help Federal merged with CTFCU, and later CTFCU joined Self-Help Credit Union.

2017

In June 2017 after months of research, study, and consideration, My Community Federal Credit Union petitioned the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) for a charter conversion to a state charter from its status as a federal charter.

2018

In 2018, two South Carolina credit unions joined the Self-Help family: Palmetto Trust Federal Credit Union (Columbia) and CommunityWorks Federal Credit Union (Greenville). Palmetto Trust Federal was started to serve local federal employees.

2021

Lower Valley Credit Union merged with Self-Help in 2021.

2022
