The investment to double Tornio’s stainless steel production was ready for operations in 1991 but only a few years later the company was considering doubling its stainless steel production again.
In 1997, the management first considered that the company should focus on stainless steel.
In December 1999, Outokumpu Oyj executives decided to launch a major expansion program at Tornio.
In 2000 the Group made a decision to focus on stainless steel, double those operations and eventually sell its other operations.
2000: AvestaPolarit is created through the merger of Outokumpu Steel and Avesta Sheffield.
The project, expected to double capacity, was scheduled to be completed by 2002.
In 2012, Outokumpu became the global leader in stainless steel and high-performance alloys, when it acquired Inoxum GmbH, the stainless steel arm of ThyssenKrupp.
