1854 Owatonna is founded by settlers with English roots and named after the Straight River, which in the Dakota language is Wakpá Owóthaŋna.
1904 Federated Insurance is founded in Owatonna as the Minnesota Implement Mutual Fire Insurance Company.
The high school was reinstated in 1916, and boys were admitted for the first time.
The Sisters of St Francis sold the academy property to the Diocese of Winona for $1.00 in 1949 with the premise that the school would always maintain a music conservatory.
Almost as soon as the building was finished in July of 1953, serious talk of reinstating the high school began.
A fund drive to build the high school, called “M” day, was held on October 27, 1957, and was an overwhelming success.
1958 The first portion of Interstate 35 is opened from Highway 14 to the Rice County line.
1998 Cabela’s World’s Foremost Outfitters opens in Owatonna.
In 2008, St Mary’s initiated a capital campaign to raise $3,000,000 to complete a number of projects that were identified as needs within the school.
In 2011, a morning SAC program was added.
