Jean Peccoud

Editor In Chief Synthetic Biology

Jean Peccoud's LinkedIn

As a pioneering scientific executive experienced in establishing and leading scientific research operations for corporations and academic institutions, I have developed and demonstrated an expertise in anticipating significant changes in scientific paradigms and refocusing my research activities to seize emerging opportunities in bioinformatics, systems biology, and synthetic genomics.

Shortly after completing my PhD in immunology, I switched to computational biology by working on molecular noise in gene regulatory networks in 1989 and published one of the first articles on this topic in 1995. In 1993, I recognized the importance of real-time PCR and developed new statistical techniques suitable to analyze this new type of data. In 2002, I observed with excitement the very early development of synthetic biology, which enabled me to lead a very exploratory project in a corporate environment and later start an academic research group dedicated to this topic.

I have a unique ability to approach complex biological problems quantitatively by integrating experimental and modeling approaches through the development of custom informatics systems. I use mathematical modeling as a language to aggregate the diverse contributions of members of cross-functional teams working on a common project.

Recently I have broadened this approach. Instead of focusing on modeling data produced by research projects, I have embarked on an ambitious initiative to model research processes themselves. Based on the success of the project thus far, my next endeavor will be to build a lean research organization for a forward looking corporation, non-profit, or academic institution interested in maximizing stake holder value in an economic environment that can no longer support a substantial growth of R&D investments.
