1959

In 1959, the PCC was dissolved and the Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU) was formed with Thomas J. Hamilton appointed Commissioner of the new league.

1968

Under Hamilton’s watch, the name Pacific-8 Conference was adopted in 1968.

1986

In 1986-87, the league took on a new look, expanding to include 10 women’s sports.

1988

In 1988, for instance, the German Democratic Republic (East Germany), with a population of some 16 million, outscored the United States, 15 times its size.

2002

The conference’s exclusive arrangement with the Rose Bowl ended in January 2002, when the game first took its turn hosting the national championship game in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS).

2010

The University of Colorado accepted its invitation to join the Pac-12 on June 11, 2010, and on June 17, 2010, the University of Utah agreed to join the Conference.

It was during the 2010-11 academic year that Scott helped deliver monumental changes that transformed the Conference into a modern 12-team league.

2011

In late July (still 2011), Scott announced the creation of the Pac-12 Networks with four founding partners from the cable realm:

DirecTV had emerged from a carriage fight with Fox in the fall of 2011 and was about to enter another with Viacom.

The story begins long before the stalemate appeared on the public radar. It begins in the early months of 2011, a full year-and-a-half before the expiration of the Pac-12’s media rights deal with ESPN and Fox.

2012

By the spring of 2012, with the launch of the Pac-12 Networks just months away, the landscape had grown treacherous

One week into the 2012 season, the Pac-12 signed a carriage deal with DirecTV’s primary competitor, DISH, which, crucially, had a different subscriber base.

2015

AT&T, which has a carriage deal with the Pac-12 through U-verse and a wide-ranging sponsorship deal with the conference at large, acquired DirecTV in 2015.

2021

Scott was succeeded by current Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff who was announced on May 13, 2021 and formally assumed the role on July 1, 2021.

2022

The Pac-12 announced on March 29, 2022 plans to forego a permanent headquarters in order to best support employees and deliver savings to member universities.
