1975

As an unenthusiastic reviewer wrote in 1975, “If decor is your reason for dining out, the Kahiki in Columbus is the place for you.”

The record year for French Polynesian migration was 1975, when 47 people were admitted.

1977

The Catholic St Joseph Women's Association in San Bruno, California, was formed in 1977 to raise funds for seminarians studying for the priesthood in Tonga.

1979

Actor Yul Brynner sued Trader Vic’s in NY’s Plaza Hotel in 1979 after eating spareribs there and acquiring trichinosis.

1980

The result was a new seafood restaurant called Newport Bay that opened in November 1980, three days before Thanksgiving.

Pacific Coast Restaurants was founded in 1980 by Robert MacLellan and Al Fleenor.

Their first joint venture began in 1980 based on a tip from a friend that a local restaurant called Dungeness Dan's was struggling.

1983

By 1983, they were joined by a third partner, their former employer Bob Ferrell.

1984

In 1984, the association began issuing scholarships and awards for educational and athletic accomplishments.

He was born in Nuku'alofa, Tonga, and graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, with a degree in English literature in 1984.

1989

By 1989, Pacific Coast had begun to make plans not only for another new eatery, the 137th new restaurant for Bob Ferrell, but also for an entirely new concept distinct from Newport Bay.

1991

When it failed in 1991 “16 tall carved knight’s chairs” and a “grand piano bar with winged dragon” were among the furnishings auctioned.

The record year for the other groups was 1991 when 1,685 Tongans and 31 French Polynesians entered.

1992

In 1992, approximately 6,000 to 8,000 Tongan Americans lived in San Francisco's Bay Area.

1993

Approximately 1,800 Tongans lived in the area in 1993.

During 1997, admission was granted to 1,549 Fijians, 21 French Polynesians and 303 Tongans.

1998

The largest of the Society Islands, it measures 33 square miles (53 kilometers). French Polynesia had a population of approximately 237,844 people in July 1998.

In 1998 a researcher on Fiji reported that:

The nonprofit guild in Utah was founded in 1998 to develop and promote the literacy and artistic talents of Pacific Islanders.

1999

On duty with the Air Force on March 31, 1999 were 13 Polynesian men, and three were officers.

By May of 1999, the foundation offered two scholarship programs and intensive SAT tutoring for high school juniors and seniors.

Although the United States government did not track active duty service by ethnic origin until decades later, an examination of the 1999 United States Department of Defense manpower records provides some information.

He served on other advisory boards, and by mid-1999, he was the only Tongan lawyer with a private practice in Utah.

He returned to Fiji in 1999.

2000

The long-lived Kahiki closed in 2000.

2001

In 2001, it had signed leases for three more restaurants in the Portland area and was making plans to open an eatery in Scottsdale, Arizona, based on the Portland Steak & Chophouse concept.

Instead, it found what it felt was a good match in Pacific Coast. It also took its boldest step yet in 2001 when it negotiated its way to the top floor of the Bancorp Tower in downtown Portland, a location with a panoramic view of the Cascade Mountains formerly occupied by a well known but struggling eatery called Atwaters.

2002

In March 2002, after $3 million and 13 months of work, the company opened the Portland City Grill, its largest establishment to date.

By 2002, declines in the high-tech industry had begun to take a serious toll on the Oregon economy, particularly in the Portland area.

2003

Revenues were rising, but profits were dropping, primarily due to the growing price of beef, chicken, dairy products, and to high payroll costs. Its new concept in downtown Portland also came to fruition with the opening of Henry's 12th Street Tavern in 2003.

2004

The struggling economy began to take a toll on Pacific Coast in 2004, however.

2005

In 2005, Pacific Coast opened a third Manzana in Bellevue, Washington.

2007

Pacific Coast places an emphasis on customer satisfaction and employee training and benefits; in 2007, the company was acquired by Seattle-based Restaurants Unlimited, Inc.

Nevertheless, it was clear that 2007 marked a new era for Pacific Coast Restaurants.
