The mission of the Environment, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) Division is to minimize risks, assure compliance with regulatory standards, and promote a culture of safety, health, and environmental stewardship. EHS&S focuses on reducing environmental impact, promoting employee health, preventing workplace incidents, and safeguarding physical and information security. Core functions include risk assessment, safety training, environmental stewardship, health monitoring, emergency preparedness, and implementing security measures. EHS&S fosters a culture of safety, maintainability, and continuous improvement, ensuring operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and long-term organizational resilience. **Responsibilities** Serves as a technical expert in the transportation of hazardous and radioactive waste for the Laboratory. Additionally, this position is responsible for providing oversight to ensure facility and project compliance with statutes, regulations, and policies. The overall objective of this position is to provide secure, compliant and efficient leadership in asset lifecycle and waste management as well as packaging and transportation of hazardous materials. Position can represent the Laboratory during inspections from outside agencies such as the Dept. of Ecology, EPA and USDOT. Principle job duties/expectations include: + Radioactive Waste Shipper (DOT marking and labeling of packages, coordinating carriers, oversee/schedule Level VI State Patrol Inspections, schedule support resources, segregation and compatibility reviews, etc.) + Waste designations (RCRA/State Code assignments, DOT determinations, disposal pathways, etc.) + Able to interpret transportation regulatory requirements. + Rad waste pickups shipping support. + Waste packaging overviews/approvals. + Hanford site waste profile preparation. + Coordinates shipping activities with onsite and offsite contractors. + Manage contracts associated with Hanford contracts. + Participate in internal and external transportation audits. + Provides input on Hanford sites Transportation Safety Document (HTSD). + Coordinates ERDF can shipments + Prepares operations procedures. **Qualifications** Minimum Qualifications: + BS/BA and 7 years of relevant experience -OR- + MS/MA or higher and 5 years of relevant experience Preferred Qualifications: + Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or related degree. + Demonstrated Laboratory experience involving chemical and/or waste management. + Demonstrated DOT hazardous material/waste shipper experience. + RCRA and Washington State waste designation training. + DOT hazardous material/waste shipper certifications. + Radiological Worker II qualifications. **Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment** Working with hazardous and radioactive materials. **Additional Information** This position involves access to sensitive systems and information. The successful candidate will have a strong background in nanoscale materials characterization, particularly in situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). The successful candidate will utilize a suite of advanced AFM instruments and will develop novel approaches for using in-situ AFM to characterize atomic-scale adsorbates, solution structure, nanoscale precipitates, and intermolecular forces at solid-liquid interfaces. Experience with solution thermodynamics, interfacial chemistry, and/or electrochemistry are also beneficial. The candidate will work as part of a team that includes world-leaders in AFM, in-situ electron microscopy, advanced surface spectroscopies, materials synthesis, geochemical and materials modeling, and atomic scale simulations. ARM has produced more than 30 years of continuous, globally extensive atmospheric measurements to benefit the global scientific community. ARM provides critical measurements of clouds, aerosols, precipitation, radiation, and other atmospheric parameters across a network of fixed ground observatories (in the U.S. Southern Great Plains, the North Slope of Alaska, and the Eastern North Atlantic), mobile field observational facilities to sample additional diverse meteorological regimes, and from aerial measurement platforms that complement the ground-based observatories. Through its high-performance computing, data analytics, and modeling capabilities, ARM transforms raw observations into community-accessible data products and large-eddy simulations, enabling scientists around the world to better understand atmospheric processes, improve Earth system models, and estimate impacts to energy systems and resilience. The ARM Director reports to the Associate Laboratory Director for Earth and Biological Sciences and provides overall scientific leadership, strategic direction, and operational oversight for the ARM enterprise, which spans a consortium of nine DOE National Laboratories.
