Perform electrical, mechanical, or civil work in overhauling, repairing, troubleshooting and maintaining all apparatus and substation property. Responsibilities * Install, maintain, test, adjust, troubleshoot, repair, operate, and overhaul all substation apparatus such as generators, circuit breakers, transformers, electric motors, protective devices, capacitor banks, regulators, condensers, pumps, reactors, load tap changers, circuit switchers, motor-operated and manual switches, bus work, wiring, battery banks and chargers, and associated equipment at switch-yards, and substations or power plants if requested. * Perform all substation inspections and documentation activities that accompany these duties for all substation equipment. * Install and maintain station service auto transfer panels, emergency generator instrumentation and controls. Assist in the installation of protective relaying or metering equipment. Install conduit, and pull wire or cable as necessary. * Use special equipment to test, maintain, or troubleshoot apparatus such as take oil samples (DGA and quality), Hydran, oil processing, power factor testing, ground grid, TTR, high pot, breaker timing, infrared camera, etc. * Work from blueprints, instruction manuals, schematics, and manufacturer's bulletins, to install, layout, repair, and/or maintain all electrical or mechanical systems as it pertains to apparatus equipment. * Perform welding and operate shop equipment such as, drill presses, grinders, saws, and torches in the repair of, manufacture, or maintenance of equipment and apparatus * Install, maintain and repair lighting, security systems, air conditioning, and heating systems. Maintain emergency power units when requested * Operate service, boom, bucket trucks, and cranes. Lift or apply hot tips as necessary to accomplish this work on station service transformers or station cap banks. * Physical requirements may include working in confined spaces and in elevated work areas such as heights from ladders, structures, scaffolds, buckets and boom trucks. General Purpose As a Substation Apprentice, you'll work under the close supervision of a journeyman or foreman and may participate in or do the following: Operate, construct, and maintain substations, switchyards and associated equipment and systems. Perform electrical, mechanical, or civil work in overhauling, repairing, troubleshooting and maintaining all apparatus and substation property. Responsibilities * Install, maintain, test, adjust, troubleshoot, repair, operate, and overhaul all substation apparatus such as generators, circuit breakers, transformers, electric motors, protective devices, capacitor banks, regulators, condensers, pumps, reactors, load tap changers, circuit switchers, motor-operated and manual switches, bus work, wiring, battery banks and chargers, and associated equipment at switch-yards, and substations or power plants if requested. * Perform all substation inspections and documentation activities that accompany these duties for all substation equipment. * Install and maintain station service auto transfer panels, emergency generator instrumentation and controls. Assist in the installation of protective relaying or metering equipment. Install conduit, and pull wire or cable as necessary. * Use special equipment to test, maintain, or troubleshoot apparatus such as take oil samples (DGA and quality), Hydran, oil processing, power factor testing, ground grid, TTR, high pot, breaker timing, infrared camera, etc. * Work from blueprints, instruction manuals, schematics, and manufacturer's bulletins, to install, layout, repair, and/or maintain all electrical or mechanical systems as it pertains to apparatus equipment. * Perform welding and operate shop equipment such as, drill presses, grinders, saws, and torches in the repair of, manufacture, or maintenance of equipment and apparatus * Install, maintain and repair lighting, security systems, air conditioning, and heating systems. Maintain emergency power units when requested * Operate service, boom, bucket trucks, and cranes. Tow oil, gas, and vacuum trailers, and other mobile equipment used in the maintenance, overhaul, and operation of plants, substations, and switchyards * Perform switching orders for System (Main Grid Ops) or Region Dispatchers, for the transmission and distribution group or the substation group to effect getting clearances and assurances to work on or maintain substation apparatus * Prepare reports and maintain records, such as work orders - notifications, mileage, timesheets, weekly activity, overhaul records and reports, inspections, equipment maintenance records. * Use high voltage proximity meters, high voltage amprobes, cordless phasing sets or power factor sets. Open or close cutout devices for station service transformers or similar equipment. Lift or apply hot tips as necessary to accomplish this work on station service transformers or station cap banks. * Physical requirements may include working in confined spaces and in elevated work areas such as heights from ladders, structures, scaffolds, buckets and boom trucks. Requirements * High School Diploma, GED, or proof of equivalent. * Must have or be able to obtain a Class A CDL. * Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. * Must be able to work at heights. * Must be able to work inside substation apparatus. * Must have completed electrical theory training, which includes AC & DC circuit power, motors and industrial controls. * Proof of electrical theory training with a "B" or better grade through an accredited institution that offers classes such as the following at SLCC: (AC and DC Essentials (EET-1140) Power and Motors (EET-2120) Industrial Controls (EET -2170) Courses taken at other institutions will be mutually approved on a case by case basis.
