Description of role: The Plant Optimization Engineer Position (POE) is a developmental program which focuses on hiring recent college graduates with degrees in engineering (0-2 years experience) into a rotational training experience with the goal of developing them into well-rounded employees and future leaders at PCA. This is a full-time, salaried position with benefits.
What is PCA's POE Program?
The POE Program is a 2-year rotational training program designed to give recent engineering graduates in depth, hands-on technical training in the Maintenance and Production departments of a corrugated box plant, and a well-rounded understanding of the corrugated packaging industry as a whole. In addition, POEs will complete engineering process optimization projects throughout the box plant, typically in areas of scrap reduction, throughput improvements, downtime reduction, etc., and will provide engineering support to all plant functions as needed.
Upon successful completion of the program, the Plant Optimization Engineer will transition into a new full-time role in the chosen career path either at their current plant, or another plant or paper mill that has an opening that aligns with their skills and interests.
Typical career paths for those who have completed the POE Program include box plant leadership/management positions in Production or Maintenance.
Principle Accountabilities:
Work closely and communicate often with the assigned POE Mentor throughout the program to help stay on track and reinforce the goals of the role.

Basic Qualifications:
A Bachelor of Science degree in engineering is required prior to starting the position.
0-2 years previous engineering experience, including internships and co-ops, providing technical support in a manufacturing plant or industrial environment.
Ability to work first, second, or third shift during the production department rotation as needed.
Must be self-driven and passionate about working in a hands-on, manufacturing environment.
Must be able to travel as necessary and possess valid documents for travel via air and car.
Preferred Qualifications:
A minimum of one Internship or Co-op is preferred, especially in a manufacturing environment.
Obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Paper Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or Engineering Technology is preferred. Other engineering majors will be considered depending on experience.
Experience with programs such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook as well as experience with manufacturing systems like shop floor software, maintenance work order systems, etc. is preferred.
Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing or Statistical Process Control (SPC) experience preferred.

The Controls Engineer will be responsible for maintaining, upgrading, and optimizing the control and automation systems at Sonoco's Paper Mill. The position will work closely with the maintenance, engineering, and operations teams to continuously improve the safety, reliability and productivity of mill systems and equipment. It has the responsibility to provide day to day technical support, develop strategic plans for system modernization, and lead or participate in project teams involving control system upgrades and installations.
What You'll be doing
* Acting as project lead for automation and control projects.
* Utilizing loop sheets, and electrical elementary diagrams for troubleshoot
* Using AutoCad top create loop sheets, and electrical elementaries for small control projects
* Tuning and evaluating control loop performance and auditing control system performance - X,Y plots of control loops to find failing control devices
* Working with engineers, operations management, maintenance personnel, and contractors to develop and meet scope, budget, and schedule requirements on assigned projects.
* Creating documentation packages for bidding, installation, start-up, and maintenance of control system projects. (scope of work, conduit layouts, cable schedules, connection drawings, bill of materials, preventative maintenance procedures, and required spares).
* Providing commissioning and startup support for controls projects.
* Developing and maintaining a project funnel for automation and control system upgrades.
* Working with plant process engineers to optimize control system performance.
* Providing direction to the maintenance team on controls related work orders.
* Training the maintenance team on new and existing automation and control systems.
* Troubleshooting alongside the maintenance team during system upsets.

* You've graduated from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical, mechanical or chemical engineering.
* You've graduated from a two-year college with an associate degree in electrical engineering and relevant field experience.
* You have experience with PLC programming including ladder logic, function diagrams, and structured text. Specific experience with Rockwell / Allen Bradley and Siemens is a plus.
* You have experience with AC and DC drives. Specific experience with Yaskawa, Siemens and Rockwell is a plus.
* You have experience with control system network interfaces and communications protocols.
* You have experience with HMI configuration and programming.
* You have experience with distributed control systems (DCS) and continuous process controls including field instrumentation and valves. Specific experience with ABB and Foxboro is a plus.
* You have experience with control system preventative maintenance including software backups.
* Possess Autocad skills to allow the creation of power plans, single lines, control panel layouts, and electrical control diagrams.
* You can demonstrate good oral and written communication skills.
* You have a proven ability to work in a team environment requiring collaboration with all levels of the organization.
* You have experience with Schneider DCS, Voith QCS, and Rockwell Contrologix/CompactLogix PLC's (This could be added to the fourth bullet point)
Compensation:
The annual base salary range for this role is from $102,080 to $114,840, plus a monthly target bonus of 12.5% of the base salary..
