JOB SUMMARY: To paint any metal, wood, concrete, furniture, or plastered surfaces as required for all facilities in Kanawha County Schools; to preserve and enhance appearances and to maintain and operate the necessary equipment to perform this task. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Additional duties may be assigned. Maintenance department employees will be required, as needed; to assist in providing general maintenance duties as may be requested by the supervisor. * Paints all surfaces, exterior as well as interior of facilities, scrape, clean, patch, caulk and prime surfaces to prepare for a finished coat of paint. * Sandblasts for cleaning and preparation. * Strips material to prepare for painting detailed work may be required. * Sprays painting and finishing of furniture in the Crede Operations Building. * Provides preventative maintenance by painting all facilities and equipment. * Maintaining all tools and equipment used in the painting process. * Maintains job tools, time and materials records. * Maintains regular attendance. * Maintains a neat and orderly work area. * Complies with KCS Policies. * Complete necessary training and in-service as required by KCS. * Receives permission from building principal/supervisor to work in excess of 40 hours per week. * Attends in-services and workshops as directed. * Follows all safety rules and regulations and uses prescribed personal protective equipment. * Maintains confidentiality. * Continuously improves processes. QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c; Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b; demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test) as required and three years' experience as a painter. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Painter means personnel employed to perform duties of painting, finishing and decorating of wood, metal and concrete surfaces of buildings, other structures, equipment, machinery and furnishings of a county school system. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, hear, walk, stoop, reach, lift, pull, and push. The work involves set-up and climbing of ladders and scaffolding; hence there is an element of danger involved in this type of work. Must be willing to work at heights of 70 feet. Must be able to utilize respirator and protection equipment as specified by the Health Department. Position Information Position Title Painter Banner Position Number 001126 E-Class CN - Class Nonexempt FT .53 or > Classification Title Painter Department Facilities & Operations Admin - MU5200 Painters perform skilled painting work in the preparation, patching, finishing, and maintaining of interior and exterior surfaces (e.g., wood, plaster, drywall, steel, concrete, and brick), on all University building structures, walls, woodwork, furniture, and equipment following recognized procedures and techniques of the painting trade and using paint brushes, rollers, and/or sprayers, sandpaper, sanders, steel wool, wire brushes, and related painting tools. The Painter also practices preventive maintenance of painting tools and equipment, and complies with federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials common to the painting trade. Certifications: * Valid driver's license. * High school diploma or GED General Duties: * Performs skilled painting work in the preparation, patching, finishing, and maintaining of all building structures, parking lots, walls, woodwork, furniture, and equipment. * Prepares surfaces for painting using sandpaper, power sanders, steel wool, wire brushes, scrappers, paint removers and chemicals, filling nail holes, cracks, or joints with putty, plaster or other fillers. * Patches and finishes drywall and other similar surfaces. * Applies paints, stains, varnishes, enamel, or lacquer using paint brushes, rollers, and/or sprayers, and related tools common to the painting trade. * Proficient with hand tools. * Skilled in the application of finishes (staining and spraying of finishes) to achieve high quality results. * Covers items with protective cloths, covering floors with cloths or tarpaulins, taping woodwork, facings, and decorative trims in a manner that prevents damage. * Restores painting work sites to their original condition at the completion of work by removing scaffolding, painting cloths, tarpaulins, and masking tape used during the project, returning furniture and equipment to their proper location, setting up equipment that had been dismantled, and cleaning any paint splatters from surfaces, furniture or equipment. * Moving furniture/items such as desks, tables, chairs, vanities, display cases, hutches, bookshelves as well as other items utilizing furniture mover equipment where necessary in preparation for work and returns items to original location upon completion. * Complies with federal regulations by following policies, laws, and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal, and the use of chemical substances and materials common to painting. * Ability to read color charts and interpret drawings and sketches. * Completes truck and shop inventories as assigned. * Maintains an organized work area, which includes cleanliness, safety and security of materials. Location MU - Marshall University Salary Range $33,381 - $43,396: Salary is commensurate with qualifications, education, experience, and internal equity.
