Purpose Statement
The job of InstructionalAssistant- Special Education is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom, a self-contained classroom and/or with an individual student; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; and providing information to appropriate school personnel.
This job reports to Teacher and/or Site Administrator
Essential Functions
Adapts classroom activities, assignments and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of supporting teachers in the classroom.
Assists medically fragile, physically disabled, or developmentally delayed students (e.g. lifting, feeding, toilet training, diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, medication, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students' personal hygiene and immediate healthcare needs.
Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g. first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, etc.) for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and parents for the purpose of assisting in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
Escorts students (e.g. bathroom, office classroom, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and safe arrival to and/or from destination.
Implements under the supervision of assigned teachers, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
Intervenes in potential conflicts utilizing appropriate physical and/or therapeutic approaches for the purpose of diffusing confrontations and minimizing disruptions.
Documents instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records for the purpose of ensuring availability of items; providing written reference; and/or meeting mandated requirements.
Models conversation, manners, clean up activities, listening, job skills, and everyday interactions for the purpose of demonstrating appropriate social behavior in a culturally sensitive manner.
Monitors student's daily schedule and behavior plan (e.g. class schedule, work schedule, personal hygiene, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.
Performs general clerical functions (e.g. copying, filing, data entry, etc.) for the purpose of supporting the instructional program.
Provides, under the supervision of assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, job skills, etc.) for the purpose of reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing IEP plans; assisting in adapting to mainstream classroom/s and/or work place; and ensuring students success in school.
Remains with students at all times for the purpose of providing for the safety of students, removing students when necessary and de-escalating situations outside the classroom.
Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Work Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking, and 30% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Performance Responsibilities
Program Planning and Evaluation
Assists in the identification and evaluation of students in need of special education programs.
Administers, transfers, and interprets diagnostic data as appropriate to his/her area.
Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
Adapts the curriculum with individual plans and instructional materials to the needs of each pupil.
Evaluates student's academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
Maintains a program inventory of materials and supplies.
Submits budget request needs.
Participates in the developing of a District-in-service educational program.
Communication
Maintains lines of communication with:
Staff teachers
Grade-level chairman
Students
Parents
Special Education Coordinator
Principals
Kinds of communication:
Faculty meetings
Grade-level and special education meetings
Dissemination of pertinent announcements and procedures
Parent-student-teacher conferences
Professional literature
Relate to the principals and special education coordinator all items of school concern
Submit reports to the administration and the special education department as needed
Supervision
Maintains proper and adequate supervision of students at all times.
Assists in supervising students in related activities outside of immediate classroom.
Professional Growth
Possesses a broad knowledge of special education and is able to transfer this knowledge into program activities.
Responsible for maintaining his/her personal growth and development in the areas of special education.
Reads professional literature pertinent to the field of special education.
Willing to participate in self-evaluation activities in order to improve one's self/professional outlook.

TITLE: Paraprofessional
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt GRADE 3
CLASSIFIED PLACEMENT SCHEDULE
GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES: To assist students in school classrooms with educational programs and assignments and to provide assistance to Teachers as needed.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES: (essential functions)
Assists elementary students in school classrooms with educational programs, special assignments and individual assistance as needed; provides assistance to Teachers as requested; duties may vary according to job assignment.
Assists students with learning tasks and Individualized Education Programs (IEP); conducts learning exercises to assist students achieve learning objectives with individual assistance or small group sessions.
Assists with development of individual learning plans, class lesson plans and special events; assists with planning, preparation and distribution of classroom materials.
Supervises students and assists in maintaining good student conduct; guides students in work and play activities; alerts teacher to student's special behavioral and learning issues.
Documents special issues and problems, and assures all required written reports are completed and submitted on a daily basis; assists with clerical duties, copying and record keeping as needed.
Communicates with parents, students and staff to convey pertinent information while maintaining confidentiality of personal information.
Enforces District policies and rules of conduct, and reports behavior issues and other concerns to supervisor or Principal.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
Knowledge of District policies and procedures.
Knowledge of classroom procedures and processes.
Knowledge of methods and techniques to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics.
Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
Skill in monitoring and improving student behavior and learning skills.
Skill in assisting children and special needs students, and assessing educational needs.
Skill in maintaining composure, and working effectively under classroom conditions.
Skill in using courtesy and respect in instructing students.
Skill in communicating effectively in verbal and written forms.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective relationships with co-workers and others.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Work is performed in a classroom environment, with moderate physical requirements. Required to perform the following physical requirements of the position with reasonable accommodation: vision corrected to 20/20, ability to hear in the normal range (corrected), able to speak clearly, and able to lift, move and carry up to 40 pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Associate's Degree; AND one (1) year of experience working with children; OR High school diploma and certification by Arizona Department of Education (ADE) Paraprofessional (ParaPro) assessment; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and skill. Must pass a thorough background investigation.
REQUIRED LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: First Aid & CPR

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten months per year. Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of classified personnel.
