Paragould School District company history timeline

1883

Paragould was incorporated March 3, 1883, while it was still an uncultivated timber cover tract.

1884

On October 6, 1884, the great iron safe containing the county records moved to Paragould under armed guard because the sheriff feared a protest from the defeated citizens of Gainesville, the former county seat.

1891

The Thompson Classical Institute, established in 1891, drew students from far outside the northeast area.

1900

The Greene County Fairgrounds were acquired before 1900 by the Fair Association which still sponsors a lively and well-attended annual county fair.

1909

1920

The timber industry flourished in Paragould from its founding into the 1920s.

1926

The history of Greene County Technical School District goes back several years, in fact to 1926.

1947

The first day of school the Greene County Technical School District was November 17, 1947 with a total enrollment reported at 1680.

The present oldest building on the campus, was started in the spring of 1947.

1948

Sixty Seven seniors graduated from the first class on May 14, 1948 and Miss Lena Simmerman was the first High School Principal.

1950

During the 1950’s GCT had a live daily radio program which broadcast live each morning from campus.

1973

The first football game was played on September 7, 1973 at Cross County.

A new administration facility was constructed and opened in August of 2007.

September 18, 2007 was a momentous day as patrons passed a 4.9 bond referendum to help construct a new high school on the old South Property located off Highway 49.
