THE ORGANIZATION The National Health Law Program (NHeLP) protects and advances the health rights of low-income and underserved individuals at the national, state, and local levels. We provide policy advocacy, litigation, continuing legal education, and individual consultation support. We work with lawyers and advocates, community- based legal organizations, federal and state policymakers, health care providers, and clients. THE TEAM NHeLP's Enforcement and Litigation Team engages in national, state, and local advocacy, focusing on class action and individual representation in federal and state courts. THE POSITION NHeLP is seeking a driven and highly motivated Paralegal to perform a range of responsibilities in support of the Enforcement and Litigation team. Regularly reviews files and proactively works to move cases forward. Documents files and updates clients when necessary regarding status of case. Maintains an expert database and researches opposing counsel's experts. Makes travel arrangements and provides directions and other necessary information to attorney. Performs research pertaining to legal issues and precedents related to particular cases. Files documents with the various courts. Performs clerical duties such as typing and filing to the extent required to produce work product or assure proper organization of case files. Enters billable time into computer on a daily basis. Meets a minimum billing requirement of 140 hours per month (1680 per year). Assist attorneys in the preparation of child custody, support, and divorce-related pleadings. Coordinate and manage deadlines for discovery, financial disclosures, and court filings. Support case strategy and trial preparation by organizing exhibits, trial notebooks, timelines, and case files. Maintain frequent communication and coordination with clients, opposing counsel, paralegals, and court staff. Schedule depositions, mediations, and hearings. Draft and respond to attorney and court emails and correspondence professionally and promptly. Meet with clients one-on-one and coordinate case management. Utilize the firm's practice management software to handle client interactions and billing. Attend firm-wide meetings and take an active role in the growth of the firm. Required Qualifications Minimum 3-5 years of family law paralegal experience (North Carolina experience preferred). Working knowledge of Wake County and/or Durham County local court rules and procedures, and familiarity with Family Court operations in Wake, Durham and/or surrounding counties Strong legal writing, research, and communication skills. High level of proficiency with legal software, Microsoft Office, and document management platforms. Familiar with time billing and law firm CRM platform, such as Practice Panther, Clio, etc. Ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize tasks with minimal supervision. Experience handling high-conflict custody cases and/or high net-worth divorce cases is strongly preferred. Ability to calmly and professionally assist individuals experiencing stress and emotional situations. Associate or bachelor's degree in paralegal studies or other relevant certification is preferred.
