The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) received a Class 1 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) in 2014 and was accredited through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) in 2018. FCFRD is a premier all-hazards fire and rescue department providing basic and advanced life support (BLS and ALS) emergency medical services (EMS), fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue, life safety education, fire prevention, and arson investigation services. Approximately 2,000 uniformed, professional, and volunteer staff work across 39 strategically placed fire and rescue stations and administrative offices. FCFRD field personnel work one of three rotating 24-hour shifts. The FCFRD has 38 ALS engines, 13 ALS trucks/towers, five ALS rescue squads, four ALS chase vehicles, three tankers, a hazardous materials unit, and 43 emergency medical transport units. Several other types of apparatus, such as brush trucks, boats, and support vehicles supplement the department. FCFRD is also home to VATF-1/USA-1, an internationally recognized urban search and rescue team that can deploy throughout the world to assist in times of crisis. The department has been accredited through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) since 2018.
Duties include:
Responds to emergency calls to protect life and property;
Combats, extinguishes, and prevents fires;
Participates in rescue extrication operations and provides emergency medical care to the sick and injured;
Provides basic and advanced emergency medical care to stabilize the condition of the critically ill or injured prior to transport to a medical facility;
Drives emergency apparatus, including, but not limited to transport units, engines, trucks, rescue squads, and tankers;
Conducts patient assessment;
Performs related work as required under direct supervision;
Participates in Community Risk Reduction and community outreach activities; and
Works as part of a team and embodies the FRD's Core Values.
Note: Following successful completion of recruit school, incumbents will serve a 12-month probationary period.

Fire Suppression
Responds to fire alarms and a variety of emergency calls

Participates in the inspection of businesses and public places for fire and life safety hazards
Inspects wiring and heating systems, basements, and attics of residences, and recommends ways to eliminate fire hazards
Inspects storage of hazardous and flammable materials and refers unsafe practices to the Fire Prevention Division
Inspects heating, cooling, ventilating, and electrical systems in commercial buildings and refers unsafe practices to the Fire Prevention Division
Inspects exits at public assemblies to ensure they are clearly marked, operate properly, and are clear of obstructions
Prepares inspection reports
Recognizes and preserves evidence on the causes of fires
Performs public relations duties (e.g., teaching school children about fire safety)
Emergency Medical Services
Drives a Basic Life Support Unit or Advanced Life Support Unit in response to emergency calls, transporting victims to a medical facility
Conducts primary and secondary patient survey
Provides and assists in rendering emergency care, such as opening and maintaining a victim's airway, giving positive pressure ventilation and cardiac resuscitation in a pulseless, non-breathing patient, controlling hemorrhages, treating for shock, immobilizing fractures, bandaging wounds, assisting in childbirth, and initiating poison and burn treatments
Performs triage assessment in a multi-casualty incident
Inspects scene of poisoning or drug overdose to determine nature of poison, and identifies antidote or treatment procedure
Treats a range of injuries requiring emergency care techniques within the scope of an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Assists in the extrication of entrapped victims, using prescribed techniques and appliances for removing the patient safely
Assures prompt medical care on delivery by reporting via radio, directly to the emergency department or control center, the nature and extent of injuries or the medical situation, as well as the estimated time of arrival
Performs routine preventive maintenance on the rescue vehicle
Stocks and maintains and participates in the inventory of supplies and medical equipment in the vehicle
Participates in medical equipment checks.
In Each Functional Area
Attends training sessions, participates in drills, and participates in the physical fitness program;
Performs housekeeping tasks in fire stations and on the grounds of fire stations
Utilizing computers and other related equipment, maintains records as necessary and completes incident reports
Participates in firefighting, rescue, and EMS duties
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school graduation or possession of a GED issued by a state department of education.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license at the time of application, and at all times during employment in the uniformed service.
Following successful completion of Fire and Rescue recruit training:
Certification as a Commonwealth of Virginia Emergency Medical Technician (EMT);
Certification in Hazardous Materials Operations- Mission Specific in accordance with Fairfax County training standards;
Certification in Virginia Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) in accordance with Fairfax County training standards;
Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Basic Life Support Provider;
Successful Completion of Incident Command System (ICS) 100;
Successful Completion of Incident Command System (ICS) 700.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Regardless of area of assignment, all uniformed fire and rescue personnel that are medically qualified for field duties as a firefighter must maintain a level of fitness sufficient to enable them to participate in fire suppression and rescue activities when the need arises, as demonstrated by successful completion of the Fitness Measurement and Assessment Program (unless granted light duty due to illness or injury).
Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation, a polygraph examination, and a physical ability test prior to appointment.
Must be 18 years old at the time of application.
Must be tobacco-free and nicotine-free at the time of appointment and be willing to sign a Conditions of Employment Agreement to not use tobacco or tobacco products on or off duty.
Personnel must maintain a Class "A" medical rating in the assigned medical group prior to starting work.
For Class "B" and "C" medical ratings, an accommodation will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
A Class "D" medical rating will not be considered.

Job Summary
Loudoun County Fire and Rescue is currently seeking qualified applicants to establish an eligibility pool for the position of Firefighter/EMT. Selected candidates are expected to provide skilled emergency and non-emergency related services, including, but not limited to: fire suppression, basic and advanced pre-hospital emergency medical care, hazardous materials incident response, technical rescue operations, life safety, public education program delivery, and other duties, as assigned.
All candidates will be required to successfully complete a Fire-Rescue Recruit School before assignment to a fire and rescue station. Generally, traditional recruit schools last approximately six (6) to seven (7) months and accelerated recruit schools last approximately 12 weeks which may be offered based on Department discretion and qualified candidate availability. While in Recruit School, Recruits will be assigned to a 40-hour work week. Upon successful completion of Recruit School, and considered minimum staffing, Recruits transition to Probationary Firefighters/EMT's and will then move to a 48- hour work week. This schedule equates to 24 hours on shift, 48 hours off shift with an assigned "Kelly day". (Kelly Day- A regularly scheduled day off at a scheduled interval to ensure a consistent 48-hour average work schedule). Employees' salaries will remain the same upon transition from a 40-hour schedule to a 48-hour schedule.
ALS Benefit: We are seeking Advanced Life Support (ALS) Providers to join our department. Upon local authorization following successful completion of Recruit School, an Intermediate or Paramedic will become eligible for a $10,000 one-time, lump sum incentive, in addition to an ALS Specialty Pay Adjustment. The current ALS Specialty Pay levels, in addition to base salary are as follows: Advanced (A-EMT) - $7,000, Intermediate - $12,500, and Paramedic - $15,000.
Education Benefit: The starting salary of Firefighter (F1), Step-1 is $62,000. LCFR's Education Benefit offers additional compensation for candidates who possess a four (4) year degree or higher. Applicants with a Bachelor's degree will start at Step 2 ($65,100.00), and a Master's Degree at Step 3 ($68,355.00).
Experience Benefit: Applicants with career fire and rescue experience from Departments with an established recruit training academy will receive year-for-year credit 1 step. Effective 7/1/2025, they are eligible for 2 steps credit. Applicants with career fire and rescue experience from other jurisdictions without recruit training experience will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Applicants who completed an LC-CFRS Volunteer Fire School Program and are active LC-CFRS Operational Volunteer Members will receive one (1) Step for every two (2) full years of Volunteer Member experience up to 1 step credit. Effective 7/1/2025, applicants will receive up to 2 step credits. Step credits earned for career and volunteer experience may not be combined.
Applicants may receive both educational and experience step credits. Total step credits may not exceed placement of Step 8.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be at least 18 years of age, must hold a valid driver's license, and possess a High School Diploma or GED by time of hire.
As part of the selection process, applicants may be disqualified for use of drugs, certain driving violations, or other factors based on selection criteria. The selection process includes the successful completion of a Comprehensive Written Examination, Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), Polygraph Examination, Comprehensive background check, including NCIC/VCIN criminal history check, fingerprinting, a driving record check, interview, and an NFPA 1582 Medical Examination/Substance Abuse Screening to be placed in the eligibility pool, as well as filling out the LCFR Supplemental Question form located here. Firefighter Paramedics will work in a fast-paced, innovative, and data driven jurisdiction with unique and high-profile special events related to its status as the Nation's Capital. Firefighter Paramedics will gain tremendous experience while supporting the core mission of the Department and also have the opportunity to apply for positions that focus on unique specialties. Firefighter Paramedics are assigned to one of thirty-three fire houses throughout the District of Columbia. The incumbent will travel primarily by fire suppression unit and medic unit in a prompt and efficient manner in response to calls for emergency incidents. Emergency incidents may include structure fires, emergency medical care of critically ill or injured patients, technical rescues, etc.
MUST CURRENTLY HOLD NATIONAL REGISTRY PARAMEDIC CERTIFICATION
Duties and Responsibilities
Incumbent provides emergency medical care in accordance with innovative and data driven protocols, which may include stabilizing critically ill or injured patients through the application of advanced life support procedures, such as intubation, peripheral intravenous insertion, defibrillation, and administration of pharmacological agents. The incumbent will drive a medic unit to a specific address or location of an emergency, choosing the most direct and expeditious route in a timely and safe manner. The incumbent will maintain basic and advanced life support care during transportation to the appropriate hospital emergency department. The incumbent will accurately report, verbally and in writing, observations, interventions, and emergency care given to the patient at the scene and in transit to the emergency department for record keeping and diagnostic purposes. The incumbent may manage emotionally disturbed, alcohol and drug intoxicated, and unruly patients.
Incumbent performs as a firefighter, responding to all conditions and life-hazards, both known and unknown, with a minimal response time. Upon arrival at an emergency incident, the incumbent will relay conditions, life-hazards, and exposures to commanding officers. As a Firefighter Paramedic the incumbent will examine structures for signs of fire extension or other dangers and determine the safest evacuation route for occupants. The incumbent will make forcible entries, make openings for ventilation, perform overhaul operations, deploy hose lines, and operate hydrant systems. Firefighter Paramedics drive and operate fire suppression apparatus of significant complexity, including pumps, aerial ladder trucks, and rescue squads. Firefighter Paramedics may extricate injured and/or entrapped patients by safely employing rescue techniques, which include various extrication devices. Additionally, they will use power tools, saws, and ventilation fans.
Qualifications and Education
Candidates must successfully pass and complete the DC Fire and EMS Department's Recruit Training Course and pass all probationary requirements. Candidates will demonstrate competence providing pre-hospital emergency care through various mechanisms, including field training.

Working Conditions/Environment

The incumbent can be exposed to irritation or discomfort from heat, smoke, dust, gaseous fumes, water, confined spaces (tunnels), radiation, and chemicals and must strictly adhere to policies and procedures designed to reduce those dangers, such as utilizing personal protective equipment. The incumbent will live in proximity with others in a dormitory-style environment for 24-hour (or longer) work shifts.

Candidates must maintain the ability to pass self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) face piece fit testing as required by OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard 29CFR1910.134.
Candidates must maintain physical fitness as defined by the ability to successfully complete annual timed fitness stress-testing.

Position Summary
The Community Paramedic will deliver in-home clinical care under established protocols, focusing on prevention, follow-up, and gap-closure in patient care. This role operates outside the typical EMS transport model. You will assess health needs, provide treatment, prevent readmissions, coordinate with patients' care teams, and help patients navigate both clinical and non-clinical barriers to wellness. You will work with autonomy, using Total Care Connect's electronic patient care record system, following physician-led protocols.
Key Responsibilities
Perform patient assessments in the home environment: vital signs, health history, home safety, risk factors, etc.
Provide in-home follow-up care post-hospitalization or after urgent care visits to prevent complications and readmissions.
Deliver patient education on disease management, medication adherence, lifestyle improvements, and social determinants of health (e.g. nutrition, housing, etc.).
Work under clinical protocols to treat/manage health issues, escalate when necessary, consult virtually with advanced providers (NPs, RNs, physicians).
Coordinate care: schedule or facilitate follow-ups, referrals, community resources, and linkages with other health or social services.
Document all care, assessments, and patient encounters thoroughly, using the organization's mobile electronic patient care record (ePCR) system.
Participate in internal meetings, trainings, and continuous quality improvement activities.
Maintain all required licenses, certifications, and compliance with relevant regulations.
Qualifications
Valid Paramedic certification/license in the applicable state, in good standing.
Minimum of 2-5 years paramedic / prehospital experience; experience in community paramedicine or similar mobile health / MIH models is strongly preferred.
BLS certification required; ACLS and PALS preferred where applicable.
Excellent clinical assessment, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently in the field, manage time well, adapt to changing schedules, and problem-solve in diverse home settings.
Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, required insurance, ability to drive to patient homes.
Comfort with technology: mobile devices for documentation, telehealth interfaces, etc.
Working Conditions

What You'll Get to Do
As a veterinary technician you will:
Assess patients upon arrival and prioritize them based on their health status after obtaining vitals
Initiate stabilization treatments such as intravenous catheterization, blood collection, fluid therapy, oxygen therapy and administering medications as directed by veterinarian
Participate in the development and implementation of treatment plans created by the veterinarian

Place nasoesophageal and nasogastric feeding tubes for critical nutrition by mastering various suturing techniques
Supply patients in need with packed red blood cell and frozen plasma transfusions
Correctly calculate drug dosages and administers drugs as directed by veterinarian
Lavage and assist in bandaging different wounds and lacerations
Provide top quality care for post-surgical cases, including specialty ICU cases
Provides outstanding customer service when triaging, gathering patient information and relevant history

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) received a Class 1 rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) in 2014 and was accredited through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) in 2018. FCFRD is a premier all-hazards fire and rescue department providing basic and advanced life support (BLS and ALS) emergency medical services (EMS), fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue, life safety education, fire prevention, and arson investigation services. Approximately 2,000 uniformed, professional, and volunteer staff work across 39 strategically placed fire and rescue stations and administrative offices. FCFRD field personnel work one of three rotating 24-hour shifts. The FCFRD has 38 ALS engines, 13 ALS trucks/towers, five ALS rescue squads, four ALS chase vehicles, three tankers, a hazardous materials unit, and 43 emergency medical transport units. Several other types of apparatus, such as brush trucks, boats, and support vehicles supplement the department. FCFRD is also home to VATF-1/USA-1, an internationally recognized urban search and rescue team that can deploy throughout the world to assist in times of crisis. The department has been accredited through the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) since 2018.
Duties include:
Conducts patient assessment (e.g., evaluates the respiratory, cardiovascular, and central nervous systems)
Provides basic and advanced emergency medical care to stabilize the condition of the critically ill or injured prior to transport to a medical facility
Confers with the supervising physician or hospital via radio or telephone, providing the patient's medical history and condition.
Administers medication via intravenous, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intraosseous, or sublingual routes
Administers advanced emergency medical procedures (e.g., inserting airways, interpreting, and treating cardiac arrhythmias, performing defibrillation, electronic pacing)
Participates in multi-disciplinary cutting-edge training to prepare for tasks such as tactical emergency casualty care (TECC) and Field-Available Component Transfusion Response (FACT*R)
Responds to emergency calls to protect life and property
Combats, extinguishes, and prevents fires
Participates in rescue extrication operations and provides emergency medical care to the sick and injured
Drives emergency apparatus, including, but not limited to transport units, engines, trucks, rescue squads, and tankers
Performs related work as required under direct supervision
Participate in Community Risk Reduction and Community Outreach activities

Note: Following the successful completion of the recruit school, incumbents will serve a 12-month probationary period. During their probationary period, they shall complete an ALS internship to become FCFRD-authorized ALS providers. The FCFRD also provides continuing education to personnel with paramedic certification during and following the probationary period. Following successful completion of ALS internship, paramedics are eligible for ALS incentive pay ($6,948) and additional ALS riding pay of $2-3/hour depending on apparatus assigned.
If unsuccessful in completing the ALS internship, candidates will be moved to a firefighter position, and their pay will be reduced by two steps.

Responds to fire alarms and a variety of emergency calls

Serves as the ALS provider on an Engine, Advanced Life Support Unit (ALSU), Paramedic Training Unit (PTU) or other apparatus as assigned
May serve as crew leader (Lead) on a Basic Life Support Unit (BLSU) or Advanced Life Support Unit (ALSU) in providing patient care
Provides advanced emergency medical care to stabilize the condition of the critically ill or injured prior to transport to a medical facility

Attends training sessions, participates in drills, and participates in the physical fitness program
Participates in firefighting, rescue, and EMS duties
Performs housekeeping tasks in fire stations and on the grounds of fire stations
Utilizing computers and other related equipment, maintains records as necessary and completes incident reports
Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

High school graduation or possession of a GED issued by a state department of education.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license at the time of application, and at all times during employment in the uniformed service.
Certified as a Virginia Office of Emergency Medical Services EMT-P and/or a National Registry Paramedic at the time of application.
Following successful completion of Fire and Rescue recruit training:
Certification in Hazardous Materials Operations-Mission specific in accordance with Fairfax County training standards;
Certification in the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) in accordance with Fairfax County training standards;
Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) Basic Life Support Provider;
Certification as a full Advanced Life Support provider in Fairfax County and in full accordance with all current County training standards;
Successful Completion of Incident Command System (ICS) 100;

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Regardless of area of assignment, all uniformed fire and rescue personnel that are medically qualified for field duties as a firefighter must maintain a level of fitness sufficient to enable them to participate in fire suppression and rescue activities when the need arises, as demonstrated by successful completion of the Fitness Measurement and Assessment Program (unless granted light duty due to illness or injury);
Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation, a polygraph examination, and a physical ability test prior to appointment;
Must be 18 years old at the time of application;
Must be tobacco-free and nicotine-free at the time of appointment, and be willing to sign a Conditions of Employment Agreement to not use tobacco or tobacco products on- or off-duty;
