Performs a wide variety of patient care tasks in a pre-hospital and hospital environment. Follows standardized procedures prescribed in a clinical pathway, including activities related to direct care, diagnostic testing, patient transport and documentation, as directed. When required, responds to emergency medical calls via ambulance and performs first aid, emergency and advanced life support treatments within authorized certification limits at sites of fire, accident, disaster, etc. When working in the hospital, does so as an employee of BH EMS. **All candidates are required to do a pre-employment medical screening as well as a WorkFit evaluation. ** Provides direct care to patients based on current policies and procedures, accepted standards of care, and established competencies in a hospital environment. Observes physical/emotional status of assigned patient/family. Able to prioritize patient care and unit activities. Provides care according to current policies and procedures and established standards of care. Appropriately seeks out assistance to assess patients or render patient care. Is aware of limitations of EMT-P and functions within those limits. Provides for the patient/family needs for psychological, emotional or spiritual support in an unhurried, empathetic manner. Meets standards of unit-based competencies on an annual basis. Assumes roles of patient advocate Consistently refers to the critical pathway when rendering care. As appropriate, initiates radio communication with qualified medical personnel to relay medical information or receive direction in treatment. Administers appropriate basic life support services, including bandaging, splinting, and administration of oxygen and poison antidotes, CPR, shock prevention treatment, burn treatment, crisis intervention, crash injury management, assisting with maternity cases, etc. Deals with a variety of hazardous, unpleasant and difficult circumstances and individuals, including patients, family members and onlookers. Coordinates activities with police, fire and other emergency responders. In addition to first aide and basic life support tasks, performs a variety of intermediate level emergency medical procedures, including administration of designated medications and IV fluids, carefully following prescribed techniques and time intervals. Performs a variety of advanced level life support and emergency medical procedures requiring extensive knowledge and skills. Procedures include advanced patient physical examinations, endotracheal intubation using laryngoscope,nasotracheal, intubation, external jugular vein canalization, external transthoracic pacing, intraosseous infusion, recognition and interpretation of a wide variety of EKG patterns and symptoms, including cardiac interpretations. Administers authorized drugs and medication, responds to diabetic, cardiac, and pregnancy related crises, and carries out such intermediate and advance level techniques as outlined in the departmental Pre-Hospital Department Protocols. Attends to patient needs during return trip to Hospital, or drives ambulance vehicle to assure prompt and safe return to Hospital. Performs appropriate duties following pre-hospital response. Cleans ambulance and restocks equipment as required. Performs designated maintenance tasks such as checking tire pressure and lights, gas and fluid levels, etc. Informs supervisor of need for vehicle repairs, and repair or replacement of damaged or questionable equipment. Accurately completes and processes all required forms and paperwork relating to calls and services rendered. Qualifications Education/Job Requirements. High school graduate. Minimum EMT-Paramedic training. Six to twelve months related experience is desirable, but not necessary. State/Federal Mandated Licensure or Certification Requirements: Minimum valid Connecticut EMT- (License). Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification. Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification. Bristol Hospital Mandated Educational Requirements: General orientation at time of hire. Accucheck, CPR, Fire/Safety/Infection Control annually. Health Care Provider CPR from American Heart Association or Professional Rescuer CPR by American Red Cross or other similar programs deemed appropriate by management. Additional cross-training as appropriate to perform diverse job duties. Successfully complete all training programs as determined by the Bristol Hospital EMS, LLC. Other unit based competencies/skills as required. Special Requirements: Knowledge of basic patient care procedures and medical terminology. Ability to work as part of a team. Data entry and documentation skills. Valid CT drivers license to operate an ambulance. Literate in C-Med radio operations Physical Requirements: Significant walking, bending, stooping, patient lifting and positioning. Manual dexterity and ability to perform a full range of body movements. Ability to lift and carry up to 100 pounds up and down stairs and rough terrain. Vision corrected to comply with State of CT drivers license standards. Capable of hearing and distinguishing heart tones, lung and bowel sounds. Capable of distinguishing odors: sweet, sour, etc. Work Environment: Normal patient care environment, including the Emergency Room. Exposure to patient fluids and waste. Rapid pace and variable environment. Pre-hospital environment includes extreme variations in temperature and lighting, exposure to heat and cold, noise, fumes, dirt, water, patient elements, with significant exposure to hazards found at fires, accident and disaster sites. Cognitive Requirements: Mental flexibility to perform diverse duties involved in patient care, frequently under emergency circumstances.
