Carolina Air Care is a CAMTS accredited critical care and emergency transportation agency serving North Carolina and surrounding areas since 1986. Our assets are comprised of four helicopters as well as a fleet of ambulances dispatched by our communications center "Flightwatch" - all operating 24 hours a day.
Helicopter bases are located in Burlington, Aberdeen, Goldsboro, and Rocky Mount. Rotor wing aircraft are staffed with one nurse and one paramedic. They respond to both emergency scene requests as well as interfacility transfers of critically ill patients Our ground assets are located throughout the Triangle.
In addition to the Critical Care Transport teams for the majority of our missions, we also have two dedicated Neonatal Specialty Care Teams, which care for our smallest patients.

Summary:
Provide safe and timely ground transport of patients, while also providing basic and advanced life support care to patients.
Responsibilities:
1. Monitors patient condition during ground transport to provide optimal stabilization.
2. Monitors communication equipment and communicates with dispatch personnel, medical staff, family members and other stakeholders: * Ensures relevant information is collected and proper treatment is administered. * Communicates assessments and plan of care in a professional manner with the appropriate personnel.
3. Documents patients' status, delivery of care and evaluation of the patients' response to care according to unit specific procedures and established protocols.
4. Contacts physicians for guidance, as needed, and follows treatment protocols as described by UNC Hospitals Critical Care Transport Medical Direction.
5. Operates medical and mechanical equipment in the pre-hospital, hospital and transport environment. Ensures all various medical equipment is functioning; restocks medical supplies as needed
6. Obtains direction regarding further care from medical staff. Delivers emergency care, such as CPR, oxygen, bandaging and splinting to patients, in accordance with reestablish protocols under UNC Hospitals Critical Care Transport Medical Direction, if necessary.
7. Participates in plan of care for patients who are acutely ill and require transport from referring institutions.

The employee serves as a member of an ambulance crew and is responsible for the medical care administered to the patient. This position is differentiated from an Emergency Medical Technician of other certification levels by the additional requirements but not limited to performing defibrillation and Cardioversion, the application of 12-lead ECG and manual interpretation, using continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), decompression of a tension pneumothorax by use of a needle decompression needle, perfuming cricothyrotomy for relief of upper airway obstructions, and performing gastric suctioning.
The employee is also responsible for maintaining supplies, performing janitorial duties at the stations, and performing miscellaneous office duties. Work is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions, extremes in temperatures, noises, and vibrations, hazards associated with emergency medical work including exposures to fumes, odors, dust, gases, poor ventilations, and oils. Because of the nature of work, the employee is exposed to human blood and is subject to the OSHA requirements on Blood Borne pathogens. The Emergency Department is a designated Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center serving as North Carolina's primary referral hospital as well as serving communities in Orange County. Follows and maintains thorough familiarity with evolving medical treatment protocols, response requirements, quality assurance procedures, local Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and other Company policies
Continuously maintains the level and type of certification(s) consistent with performing the duties of an EMT
Operates Company vehicles in accordance with Risk & Safety policies; is familiar with and abides by traffic laws governing the operation of emergency response vehicles
Maintains a driving record in compliance with Risk & Safety policy requirements
Develops ability to locate addresses quickly and safely through knowledge of number systems and street layouts with and without the assistance of maps and electronic mapping devices.
Performs beginning of shift checks to ensure the ambulance is in a state of mechanical readiness; tops off fluids as necessary; ensures that appropriate equipment and supplies are on board
Reports immediately to the Supervisor any discrepancies in vehicle, equipment or supplies standards that could compromise the unit's ability to complete a call
Notifies Fleet Maintenance/Supervisor of mechanical failures of the ambulance and equipment
Ensures the ambulance is cleaned inside and outside, restocked, tagged as necessary, and fueled at the end of each shift
Completes all appropriate documentation as outlined in Company policy.
Reports problems or unusual occurrences immediately to the Supervisor
Attends all mandatory training and in-service events
Fosters and maintains cooperative working relationships with peers, facility staff and public safety personnel.
Maintains complete and accurate documentation of patient assessment and treatment
Maintains complete and accurate documentation of patient statistical and billing information and services rendered.
Uses/operates appropriate communications equipment, medical equipment, cleaning equipment, office equipment and tools.
Appropriately uses medical equipment such as gurney, airway equipment/airway bag, IV, splints, bandages, and medications in rendering proper emergency medical treatment of patients
Reads medication/prescription labels and directions for usage in quick, accurate and expedient manner
Communicates effectively with empathy and compassion to interview patients, their family members, bystanders, other service agency members and facility staff
Discerns deviations/changes in eye/skin coloration due to patient's condition and to the treatment given
Listens to and takes direction from Dispatch
Converses with Dispatch, facility staff and other responders via phone or radio as to status of patient
Fosters and maintains excellent working relationships with all internal and external facility staff
Conducts self in a professional manner in accordance with the Company's ‘Standards of Conduct' policy
Arrives for duty appropriately groomed and in the proper work dress/uniform
Maintains punctual and regular attendance
Completes all required/assigned Company training
Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications & License/Certification:
Must be at least 18 years of age
Must have a high school diploma or GED
Must have a clean background and ability to pass a drug screen
Effective oral and written communication skills; strong listening and comprehension abilities, adaptability to quickly evolving situations, and strong decision making.
State of North Carolina EMT-B and National Registry EMT-B Certification (Required)
CPR Certification (Required)
Valid Driver's License (Required)
1 year of EMT experience (Preferred)
EVOC (Preferred)
Working Conditions:
Must be available to work days, nights, weekends and holidays, extended workdays.
Long periods inside the ambulance.
May work indoors or outdoors with exposure to weather.
Possible routine exposure to moderate noise levels.
May periodically work in poorly lit environments in a moving vehicle
Physical Demands:
Moderate to extended amounts of sitting, standing, and walking.
Some repetitive motion activities.
Routinely lifting more than 300 lbs. with assistance.
Pushing, pulling, reaching, lifting, bending, squatting, kneeling, twisting, carrying, typing and stair climbing.
Visual identification of color-coded items.
Clear speech and hearing.
Must be able to wear a face mask or respirator with proper fit for extended periods when required
