The Emergency Department Tech works as a team member with other ancillary personnel under the direction of the registered professional nurse to meet care needs for a specified population of patients. These duties are to be performed in a highly confidential manner, following the mission, values, and behaviors of Insight Hospital and Medical Center. Employees are further expected to provide a high quality of care, service, and kindness toward all patients, staff, physicians, volunteers, and guests. Duties and Responsibilities: 1. Under the direction of, and in partnership with, the registered professional nurse performs all of the following activities as directed, based on the individual needs of the patient: * Collects clinical data, reporting any unusual results to the nurse. * Performs 12 Lead EKGs as directed * Places patients on cardiac monitors and begins oxygen therapy as directed * Ensures that required supplies are available in patient cubicles as well as supply cupboards within the larger ED * Completes patient rounds on an hourly basis * Maintains open communication with the nursing staff 2. Performs assigned therapeutic tasks: * Lifting, positioning, ambulating patients * Assists with dressing changes as directed of RN * Feeds patients * Assists with application of restraints as directed * Performs oral and nasal suctioning as directed * Setup suture trays and accessories and clean wounds as directed by the nurse 3. Collects specimens as assigned: * Performs phlebotomy for blood specimen collection and transports to laboratory when needed. * Collects urine, stool, and sputum specimens as directed * Draws type/cross match for blood administration and properly sends specimens to the lab * Assists with exams as instructed and obtains cultures as needed 4. Performs basic nursing procedures as directed: * Assists patients with oral hygiene, personal grooming, and bathing as needed * Provide patients with bedpans, urinals, and blankets when requested * Delivers and removes food trays promptly and changes bed linen according to policy and patient need. * Retakes vital signs in triage and patients waiting for test results at 2-4 hours intervals or as directed by the nurse 5. Anticipates need for supplies for dressing changes, repair of laceration or other procedures, and places required supplies at the bedside in preparation for use: 6. Assists with transport of patients as directed; upon successful completion of Basic Arrhythmia course, may transport STABLE monitored patients to the Telemetry Unit and/or to diagnostic testing areas. 7. Answer the telephone and take messages adhering to all HIPPA guidelines 8. After patients have left the treatment area: * Strip and clean carts, cover with clean linen, and put carts in rooms where needed. * Clean and restock treatment rooms to prepare the room for the next patient 9. Perform post-mortem care as directed. 10. Additional Duties and Responsibilities: * Ensures that care is provided for all patients incorporating the attributes of Careful Nursing. * Carries out other duties related to patient care and unit operations. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * High school diploma is required. * Prior experience in a comparable position at Insight Hospital or EMTB (Emergency Medical Technician Basic) is required. * CPR Certification is required. * Demonstrate basic competencies and successful passage of a cognitive exam upon completion of orientation required. * Hospital experience and CNL certificate preferred. * Ability to quickly recognize changes in condition and needs of patients. * Knowledge of patients' growth and developmental needs. * Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy in carrying out work duties. * Ability to work with city departments such as police, fire, ambulance, and other health care officials.
