PARC company history timeline

1972

First deployed in 1972, Smalltalk was the first object-oriented programming language with an integrated user interface, overlapping windows, integrated documents, and cut & paste editor.

1979

So while the Xerox’s own personal computer the Alto was a commercial flop, Apple’s Macintosh became a legendary success that kickstarted a revolution. It was in December 1979, when Steve Jobs made his first visit to Xerox PARC. As part of a deal that allowed Xerox to buy one hundred thousand shares of Apple, Jobs was given permission to see the inventions that PARC engineers were working on.

1981

By the time its commercial successor, the Xerox Star, was released in 1981, at over $16,000 per machine, it was too late.

1984

The Ethernet, a prototype of the modern PC, the graphical user interface (GUI), a commercial version of the mouse, page description languages and laser printers were all invented at PARC. For example, Apple launched the Macintosh Computer in 1984.

1986

Xerox's laser xerographic printing business will reach $1billion per year by 1986.

1999

In 1999, 3M signed on to manufacture and help develop electronic paper products.
