Job Responsibilities
This position is accountable for operation of a mobile drill rig, core rig and related equipment to obtain soil, rock and pavement samples for soil surveys, foundation borings, embankment borrow pits and pavement analysis.
Geographic Area: 7 counties

This position reports to the Geotechnical Technician. No subordinates report to this position.
This position functions in a potentially hazardous environment and safety precautions are necessary for proper use of the drilling and coring equipment. This position is unique in that it requires outside work frequently in remote areas and often in inclement weather.
Typical problems dealt with in this position are ensuring that the drill rig and core rig are properly maintained and in safe working order, being familiar with the tools used in performing soil borings and knowing the various techniques required to obtain accurate soil and rock samples. The greatest challenge of this position is operating the drill rig and core rig in a safe and efficient manner and to obtain accurate soils or pavement information in a timely manner while maintaining the equipment to eliminate downtime.
The incumbent assists in locating boring/coring locations, determining the required depth of each structure boring, establishing elevations by use of level or transit, performing unconfined compression tests and standard penetration tests, visually inspecting samples and classifying soil samples according to consistency, texture and grain size. S/He will provide site clearing and positioning of the drill rig, core rig, augers, drill rods and sampling tools. The incumbent must know and perform necessary equipment maintenance. The incumbent does lab analysis of soil samples and other lab testing as necessary and may also assist other areas within the Materials Bureau as needed.

The incumbent operates within the guidelines established by the IDOT Geotechnical and Subgrade Stability Manuals, Specifications for Structure Borings, applicable American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications. This position takes independent action in performing the required work, obtaining the necessary soil samples and recommending the replacement of equipment and tools to the supervising Geotechnical Technician.
This position has internal contacts with the personnel in the Bureau of Project Implementation, Bureau of Program Development and may have some external contact with property owners. Occasional travel within the district and outside the district are requirements of this position. Overtime may also be necessary to fulfil the duties of this position. The incumbent must obtain an Illinois Class B CDL with full airbrakes within six months of appointment.
The effectiveness of this position is determined by the proper maintenance and operation of the drilling and coring equipment and by the timely completion of assigned projects.

1. Obtains soil, rock and pavement samples using appropriate equipment procedures.
2. Ensures proper and safe use of drilling and coring equipment and associated tools.
3. Maintains accurate records of equipment usage, drill rig, core rig and truck maintenance.
4. Performs various lab testing for soil and pavement core samples.
5. Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
6. Performs other duties as assigned.
