Park Sterling history

In 1879, Loudoun County School District No.

According to Scheel, “Visitors had their choice of five or six stores to shop in, and they say, five barrooms.” Industry came to the village in 1908, with the establishment of the Sterling Grain Company, which was first operated by steam, then gasoline, and finally electricity.

In 1914, DuPont announced that it had purchased the Hopewell Plantation, not far from City Point Virginia.

Doctor Moore, a 1916 graduate of the University of Virginia (UVA) Medical School, was a medical officer in the United States Army, serving in France during the First World War.

The strongest to survive was the store run by the partnership of Carl O. Whaley and Will Groom, who ran the Sterling Emporium (later called the Sterling Mercantile Company) until 1926.

Doctor Moore purchased the property now included in Claude Moore Park, and in the Park View High School campus, in 1941 from Irene Bridges.

In 1946, my father, Marvin Jr., and his brother Joel returned home from European military service and joined M.T. in establishing three businesses.

Remarkably, it would serve until students until 1947, when the Loudoun County School Board opened the new brick Sterling School across Church Road, on a five-acre tract of land that they purchased from James and Nellie Ryder for $1,250.

In 1951, he built a huge house on North Vermont Street in Arlington.

He took office in 1952 and after that, he devoted very little time to the family business, as he was in Congress everyday.

"In late winter 1961, they made the decision to buy," and incorporated Sterling Park Development Corporation with his son Marvin T. Broyhill, president, and a cousin, Thomas J. Broyhill, vice president.

The Broyhills filed their plat, now named "Broyhill's Addition to Sterling Park," on May 15, 1962.

Around 1964, United States Steel got tired of pouring money into what seemed to be a bottomless pit and it took over the project construction.

Doctor Moore possessed the property until 1975, when he donated it to the National Wildlife Federation for environmental education outreach.

At the southwest fringes of the future development were vast stretches of Sterling Farm, owned by Fred Franklin Tavenner, "a little kin to Benjamin Franklin," he proudly told me in 1977.

M.T. Broyhill & Sons partnership continued as the family real estate holding company until dissolved in 1984. .

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) sold the property to developers in 1986.

The county opened Claude Moore Park in 1990, with the help of many volunteers.

He retained life-estate and continued to reside in Lanesville until his passing in 1992.
