Position OverviewWe are currently seeking a Licensed General Contractor to serve as a part-time Instructor/Subject Matter Expert (SME) for our CA General Building Contractor exam prep program. The purpose of this position is to teach and assist in the preparation of pre-licensing curriculum, with specific focus on both the Law and Business examination and the Trade examination components of the California Class B General Building Contractor license.
This individual will lead online exam preparation classes to help students prepare for and pass their California State Contractors Licensing exams. They will provide expert guidance on critical exam topics including project management, building standards, safety requirements, and California construction law. They may occasionally be asked to assist with updating course content as needed. Other responsibilities may include scripting and filming instructional video content to enhance the online student experience and developing practice questions that mirror the actual exam format.Position Requirements & Major Responsibilities
Teach assigned course according to the curriculum plan.
Actively engage with students both online and in-class.
Implement teaching strategies that will assist the student in meeting established course objectives.
Mentor students and mitigate potential performance issues.
Assist with updating course content when needed/required
Ability to instruct classes in California General Building Contractor Trade Exam Prep and Business Law, as needed
Conduct regular Student Orientation and Virtual “Office Hours” as required with students.
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of both the Law and Business and Trade components of the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB) examination
Provide detailed instruction on key exam topics including:
o California Building Code requirements
o Construction safety regulations and OSHA requirements
o Project planning and scheduling
o Construction math and estimating
o Contract requirements and business law
o Framing, concrete, and other trade-specific knowledge
Create and review practice questions that align with current exam content
Stay current with CSLB exam updates and requirements
Provide practical insights and exam-taking strategies based on personal experience
Develop and maintain study materials that address common exam challenges
Guide students through practice exercises and mock exams
Maintain knowledge of current construction practices, codes, and regulations
Qualifications
Prior experience preferred teaching pre-license courses in construction-related trades or professional education.
Current license as a Class B General Building Contractor in the State of California.

Requirements:
Must have an Associate degree in Construction Management (Bachelor's degree preferred)
CCM certification preferred.
Applicants must have a minimum of 10 years of demonstrated resident inspection experience in one or more of the following categories:
Water- Sewer Linear Infrastructure
including rehabilitation, relining/CIPP, relocations and new construction
Water or Wastewater Pumping Stations
including new construction and rehabilitation
Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants
including upgrades or rehabilitation and new construction for facility expansions.
All projects require monitoring the contractor's work for conformance to the design contract plans, specifications and general permit requirements, tracking daily quantities, completing daily electronic inspection reports, reviewing payment requisitions, maintaining field construction documentation and as-built drawings.
Specific experience with regional W-WW agencies preferred, including but not limited to PWSA and ALCOSAN.
Additional Training or Certifications:
Sediment & erosion control certifications- NICET, NASSCO certifications desirable including NASSCO- PACP/MACP/LACP for sanitary sewer pipeline and manhole repairs/rehabilitation.
Certification in Temporary Traffic Control also required for any assigned contracts involving monitoring Contractor MOT or Lane Closures.
Confined Space training and current certification required for all manhole/pipeline inspection assignments.
Applicant must have a valid driver's license and personal vehicle for travel to and from assigned construction sites.
Must have good communication skills
Must have the ability to read/interpret plans and specifications; writing and drawing skills necessary to complete inspection reports and sketch books.
Basic computer skills are required for completing electronic inspection reports including familiarity with eConstruction software for project document control.
Physical Requirements (Essential Functions):
This position requires the ability to perform a variety of physical tasks in the field as part of the essential job functions. Duties may include:
Walking and navigating across rough or uneven terrain such as mud, rocks, grass, dirt, steep hillsides, heavily wooded areas, and other unpaved surfaces
Moving around active project sites, which may involve climbing ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, or poles
Performing physical activities such as bending, twisting, kneeling, and climbing
Remaining in a stationary position-either standing or sitting-for extended periods of time
Repetitive motions involving the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
Lifting objects weighing up to 50 pounds and/or carting objects up to 50 lbs distances up to100 yards.
Driving to and from project sites which may involve distances of up to or exceeding 120 miles round trip.
Must be able to function safely in an environment with potential risks, including, but not limited to those described in this document.
Work from heights exceeding 6 feet
