Patent attorney job description

COJK is seeking an associate-level patent attorney with at least three years of experience to join our firm's Life Sciences Patent Practice Group. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, patent preparation and prosecution, patent licensing, and conducting due diligence. The position requires working closely with clients, inventors, and firm attorneys.

Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills, as well as an ability to develop and expand internal and external relationships. The candidate must excel in a team environment, as well be a motivated self-starter who works well under pressure, with the flexibility to thrive in a fast-paced environment. This is currently a remote position.

Requirements include an advanced degree in organic chemistry, a J.D. from an accredited law school, a minimum of three years of experience in drafting and prosecuting chemistry patent applications, a license to practice law in at least one state, preferably Washington, and admittance to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).Candidates must have industry experience of at least two years in organic chemistry; patent experience in the pharmaceutical industry is a plus.

Education and Qualifications:

This individual will be responsible for the patent portfolio and new product risk mitigation for various Business Units within Milwaukee Tool.
Duties and Responsibilities:

•Provide advice to the Business Units' engineering and marketing leadership regarding patentability and infringement risk for new product development
•Evaluate, develop, and implement patent filing and searching strategies for new products
•Serve as a liaison between in-house engineering and marketing teams, global subsidiaries and affiliates, and outside counsel
•Counsel and coach engineering and marketing personnel regarding patent issues
•Present patent risks and updates for new projects to management in a clear and concise manner, with ability to provide practical legal advice upon which effective business decisions may be made
•Participate in recurring new product development meetings to stay informed on changing product design features, assist engineering teams with understanding the patent landscape, and harvest strategic inventions for patent protection
•Monitor competitor portfolios to offer strategic advice to the business
•Chair and prepare necessary materials for IP Review Committee to inform leadership of patent risks, opportunities, and developments
•Analyze offensive and defensive infringement positions, send and respond to patent notice letters, and support IP litigation

Education and Experience Requirements:

•Bachelor's degree in Engineering or educational equivalent (mechanical or electrical engineering preferred)
•Juris Doctor Degree from an accredited law school
•Registered to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office
•Minimum 3 years experience in IP counseling, patent preparation, and prosecution (law firm or corporate legal department experience)
•Strong communication, critical thinking, and writing skills to support effective communication with all levels of marketing, engineering, and leadership within the business
•Attention to technical and administrative detail
•Self-motivation to immerse with the business and engineering teams to support legal needs and to quickly learn the business' goals and objectives
•Ability to develop, communicate, and execute IP tactics to support those business needs

About the job

TI's legal department is searching for an experienced Patent Attorney who has electrical engineering knowledge and experience to join our legal team in Dallas, Texas.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to :

• Solicit disclosures of inventions and assist inventors in filing timely and accurate disclosures
• Determine patent application filing priorities
• Provide leadership to technical disclosure selection processes
• Write and prosecute US and non-US patent applications
• Analyze issued patents
• Provide counsel to business groups on intellectual property matters
• Provide counsel to business groups on intellectual property matters
• Protect TI intellectual property worldwide
• Assure TI realizes maximum return on TI's intellectual property investment

Minimum Requirements :

• Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
• A law degree is required
• Must be registered as a patent attorney with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office
• Must be admitted in good standing with a state legal bar
• Patent application and prosecution experience is required

Preferred Qualifications :

• 4+ years' patent prosecution experience
• 3+ years' experience as an engineer/scientist in a technical role
• Experience and familiarity with processor architectures, digital signal processing, machine learning, digital communications, or integrated circuit design is desired
