Dana-Farber Cancer Institute pathologist job description

The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Center for Immuno-Oncology (DFCI CIO) is recruiting a Pathologist/Histopathologist to perform pathology review, interpretation and analysis of research projects in the CIO Tissue Biomarker Laboratory.

The CIO's goals are to support the conduct of human-based immuno-oncology research and develop innovative approaches and technologies. As part of the Center, the Tissue Biomarker Laboratory performs quantitative and qualitative assessment of Immune Biomarkers, and supports DFCI research projects by performing multiplex quantitative immune-staining and image analysis, as well as other research analyses such as chromogenic immunohistochemical (IHC) staining, targeted gene expression profiling and molecular classification, targeted genetic and genomic analyses (FISH).

The Tissue Biomarker Laboratory employs 2 Ph.D. scientists and 5 technicians and is involved in 10-12 collaborative research projects at any given time. A critical component of all projects is to perform pathology review to identify and interpret specimens required for research projects, as well as to interpret images and data resulting from the use of innovative testing technologies. The CIO Histopathologist will be responsible for completing all necessary Pathology review, interpretation and analysis for projects in a timely manner.

Manage and coordinate all Pathology day-to-day activities across TBL, and coordinate Pathology-required activities with other labs within and outside of CIO.

Assess quality of specimens received to verify they are adequate for testing. Ensure proper treatment, labeling, and storage of research specimens to maintain the diagnostic viability of specimens for histological and cytological analyses as well as to optimize testing.
Review specimens/slides to confirm adequacy and annotate regions of interest. Review and interpret of hematoxylin & eosin (H&E) stained tissue sections. Review, interpret and approve immunohistochemical/ immunofluorescence-stained tissue sections and image analysis data. Review, interpret and approve image analysis data. Review and interpret histopathology data with laboratory scientists internal and external to CIO.
Work closely with CIO TBL Director, CIO TBL Lead Senior Scientist and CIO Associate Director to ensure the successful and timely completion of research projects performed by the Center. Anticipate, identify and resolve pathology-related issues on an ongoing basis. Assist with assessing the pathological implications of any analyses conducted in TBL. Advise DFCI-investigators and Laboratory Scientists on appropriate testing and analysis of tissue-based biomarkers Collaborate and seek Pathology expertise, as needed, with the DFCI Department of Pathology. Provide project management and liaison support for collaborators; however, this position does not have any direct reports.
MD with post-graduate training (within the US or international) in diagnostic histopathology and 6+ years of post-graduate/training experience is preferred. Experience in Oncology or cancer research is strongly preferred. Expertise and/or practice in interpreting immunohistochemical/ immunofluorescence stains is preferred. Experience with image analysis software is expected. Demonstrated experience working independently. Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and excellent organizational and analytical skills. Ability to work closely and effectively with a diverse group of individuals from technicians to senior leaders. Demonstrated experience working in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment. Excellent oral and written communication skills.

**Overview**

Under general supervision of the Field Director, reviews assigned functions in Pathology and Clinical Laboratory Program throughout the United States and in some foreign countries. Provides general evaluation services, education, and consultation consistent with applicable Joint Commission standards, policies, and protocols. Determines the degree of compliance with applicable standards.

+ Conducts a thorough and credible evaluation of assigned services that meet laboratory accreditation criteria. Plans, reviews and apportions review time so that all review requirements are addressed thoroughly. Reviews and evaluates pre-survey information; researches, collects, organizes, and interprets information from multiple sources. Interviews physicians and staff to determine level of compliance with standards. Analyzes documents, such as performance data, and use of clinical practice guidelines, to assess the level of compliance with Joint Commission standards, evidence of performance improvement, and quality of care.

+ Using established review protocols:

+ Analyzes written self-descriptive program information.

+ Participates in and/or conducts all required conferences and interviews; analyzes all data submitted by the organization.

+ Documents all recommendations, providing adequate indication of non-compliance.

+ Submits review findings in a complete and accurate manner to the Clinical Laboratory Scientist Surveyor.

+ Interprets and explains the intent of the standards to the organization's personnel. Consults with the organization during review concerning non-compliance, opportunities for improvement, and remedial action required. **Qualifications**

Education

1. Pathologist, Board Certified in Clinical and Anatomic Pathology

General Knowledge and Experience

1. Five years of recent clinical experience, including at least two years in management, preferably laboratory, and two years demonstrated responsibility for oversight, decision-making, management, and improvement in histopathology and cytology.

2. Demonstrated knowledge of pathology industry including trends, performance measurement, and improvement.

3. Demonstrated knowledge of compliance requirements related to CLIA'88.

4. Demonstrate general knowledge in areas of Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology.

Analytical Skills

1. Ability to research, collect, organize, interpret, and communicate information for multiple sources (i.e., documentation, observation, interviews) to assess the degree of compliance with Joint Commission standards.

2. Ability to critically review and analyze performance measurement data.

3. Ability to objectively assess organization performance.

4. Ability to differentiate and assess the adequacy of alternative/innovative approaches to standards compliance, consistent with survey policy and protocols.

5. Ability to analyze and synthesize survey findings to provide conclusions, recommendations, and educational opportunities.

Physical Abilities:

1. Must be able to observe, in real time and without slowing or otherwise interrupting the progress of, all applicable types of ongoing health care treatment (e.g., including emergency treatment, treatment during weather and other extreme situations, etc.).

2. Standing for long periods of time, walking lengthy distances, lifting, climbing, stooping, pulling, and pushing in order to adequately inspect and observe all medical facilities, equipment and procedures, such as emergency exit procedures, remote storage facilities, any areas where cleanliness may affect the possibility of infection, medical equipment, etc., including the following activities:

+ walking up and down stairways (e.g., to test escape routes, assess safety of emergency exits, regulatory compliance, etc.);

+ removing obstructed covers or impediments to equipment or other mechanical areas;

+ examining small and often dirty printed labels and print on equipment;

+ Mustbe able to engage in extensive travel as set forth above, including driving a car to remote locations, flying on small airplanes and into small airports, traveling in all types of weather conditions, etc.
