** Summary:**
The Senior Pathologists' Assistants are academically and practically trained to provide accurate and timely processing of a variety of laboratory specimens, including comprehensive macroscopic examination and evaluation of all surgical pathological specimens. The Senior PA is responsible for case accessioning (when needed), gross description and sampling of tissue specimens at all levels of complexity, evisceration and prosection of autopsies, compilation and dictation of preliminary autopsy diagnosis, preparation and collection of tissue for special studies, evaluation of and sampling of tissues at time of frozen section, cutting, staining and cover slipping of frozen section tissue, photographing of surgical autopsy cases, opening/selection of tissue for The Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN), maintaining supplies of gross room/morgue, disposal of old specimens (when necessary), identification of and resolution of labeling/identification discrepancies, assisting other gross room staff (when appropriate), assistance with procedural writing and updates (when appropriate). All of the above is done with a degree of supervision needed for each activity. The supervision level is determined by the Pathologists' Assistant Supervisor or the Pathologist in charge of the gross room.
**Responsibilities And Duties:**
80% Evaluation and gross dissection of all specimens at all complexity levels.
Accurately complete the gross evaluation of all surgical specimens including the most complex non-cancer and cancer cases. This necessitates proper description/dictation, identification, sectioning and cosseting of the specimen. The specific scope will be as expansive as skill and knowledge allows.
5% Assistance in gross room frozen section preparation.
Under direct or indirect Pathologist supervision, evaluate and select tissue for frozen section diagnosis. If necessary, perform all functions of the slide preparation including tissue freezing, cutting, staining, and cover slipping. Preparation of and staining alcohol/air-dried touch preps is also necessary. Process special study tissue i.e. ER/PR, Lymphoma, Chromosome analysis when needed. Must be able to keep simultaneous frozen section specimens on different patients and/or same patient with multiple sites separated, properly identified, organized, and labeled.
5% Autopsy Performance
Perform identification and external examination of autopsy case. Perform the evisceration and prosection of autopsy cases. Dictate gross findings and prepare preliminary autopsy diagnosis. Eviscreation includes organ/organ block removal, weighing of selected organs and the further dissection of the tissue. Prosection includes the selection of tissue for microscopic examination and the dictation of the gross findings. Closing the body cavities and cleaning of the autopsy suite is also required (when necessary). The cleaning is to follow the established safety and infection control procedures.
5% Maintenance of Gross Room
Ensure that all instruments are sharp and that work stations are well-stocked. Maintain all machines in an excellent working manner. Keep supply inventory at an optimum level and order supplies when needed. Ensure that the general cleanliness of the gross room is preserved in an excellent manner.
5% Perform miscellaneous assigned tasks
This includes but is not limited to the photographing of surgical specimens, assisting Supervising Senior PA in meeting CAP standards, the disposal of tissue, observance of all safety precautions, computer knowledge, file correlation, troubleshooting, accessioning, and the preparation of conference case material.

+ TECHNICAL:

The Assistant Laboratory Manager- Evenings/Nights assists the Core Laboratory Manager in management of the Core Lab and develops, implements, monitors, and coordinates the day-to-day operation of the Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, and other sections of the Laboratory. The Assistant Laboratory Manager- Evenings/Nights oversees the workflow of personnel in other Laboratory sections working evening and night shift. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
* High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
* Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology required
Licensure:
* MLT, MT, or MLS licensure by ASCP or AMT required
* BMVL required (Must maintain eligibility to drive as determined by SOMC insurance carriers
Experience:
* Approximately three years progressively more responsible related work experience is preferred in order to gain comprehensive technical knowledge of a wide variety of Laboratory techniques and procedures, equipment, operation and regulatory and accrediting agency standards, and to be able to organize and coordinate activities of a large staff.
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
1. Coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Core Laboratory (Chemistry, Hematology, and Blood Bank) on the evening and night shifts. The Assistant Laboratory Manager- Evenings/Nights oversees the workflow of personnel in other Laboratory sections working evening and night shift.
2. Assists the manager with staff assignments.
3. Makes workflow decisions to ensure efficient operation of all Laboratory sections operating on evening and night shifts to meet expected turn-around-times.
4. Monitors daily productivity of all Laboratory evening and night staff.
5. Reviews abnormal and atypical test results.
6. Acts as a resource person for the staff for technical and personnel related problems. Ensures that established policies and procedures are followed.
7. Ensures that Core Laboratory instrument calibration, maintenance, linearity checks, and correlations are performed; performs these functions as needed. Maintains documentation of maintenance and service records.
8. Ensures that quality control for Core Laboratory instrumentation is performed and evaluated for shifts and trends.
9. Follows up on proficiency testing failures.
10. Evaluates new Core Laboratory methodologies and instrumentation. Ensures testing for the implementation of new methods and procedures is performed and reviews associated documentation.
11. Writes, reviews, and updates policy and procedure manuals to comply with CAP and CLIA-88 standards. Prepares the Core Laboratory to meet inspection requirements.
12. Keeps current with regulations affecting the Core Laboratory.
13. Coordinates and participates as needed in the orientation and training of staff. Completes staff competency checklists. Performs staff competency testing. Oversees and develops section educational needs.
14. Provides input for performance appraisals for the Core Laboratory staff and evening and night shift staff from other sections. Maintains documentation of work performance and behaviors.
15. Guides, directs, and counsels all evening and night shift staff regarding performance, problem solving, decision making and behaviors. Ensures that staff complies with the SOMC Code of Conduct, uses AIDET, uses AHEART, follows Red Rules, and follows safety policies.
16. Monitors Incident reports and follows up on reports as assigned.
17. Assists manager with coaching and corrective actions of all evening and night shift staff when necessary.
18. Assists manager with staff meetings. Regularly communicates with staff. Promotes positive intradepartmental relationships.
19. Performs and monitors preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and repairs on equipment. Contacts outside service personnel when appropriate. Maintains documentation of maintenance and service records.
20. Monitors dashboard indicators related to area of responsibility. Collects data for dashboard. Assists manager with development and implementation of action plans/task lists. Implements and maintains strategic value standards for staff related to Core Laboratory section.
21. Ensures staff delivers a high level of customer service. Promptly investigates customer complaints. Follows up with patients and patient relations as appropriate.
22. Assists the manager with planning, designing, and implementing services that meet the customers' needs. Collaborates with the medical staff and nursing staff, both in-house and outreach clients, to meet their customer needs.
23. Provides information regarding resource needs within area of responsibility. Provides information to aid budget variance analysis.
24. Maintains appropriate levels of inventory. Orders reagents and supplies to ensure continuous service.
25. Serves on departmental committees and teams when needed.
26. Assists manager with MLT student interns. Serves as an educational resource for students.
27. Makes self readily available for staff and customer needs.
28. Performs the duties of an MLT as needed.

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Laboratory Assistant is responsible for receiving and processing specimens, cleaning lab equipment, maintaining supplies and performing various clerical duties. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.
Job Functions:
Receives Laboratory samples and checks them for order accuracy. Troubleshoots as needed.
Utilizes the ability to prioritize STAT, urgent, timed and routine orders.
Maintains/orders adequate stock of supplies.
Utilizes the computer system that communicates between our outlying facilities and Meditech. Performs, orders and/or sends orders from the Atlas and Quest system to Meditech.
Registers using short form and order appropriate tests.
Labels, receives, centrifuges if needed, and aliquots tubes appropriately.
Assists with lab clerical duties including recalling results, faxing reports, and calling of alert values to physicians.
Evaluates specimen integrity before analysis.
Properly documents and reports NCE investigation/incident reports.
Assists with training new employees and students.
Cleans lab equipment including centrifuges, counters, and printers.
Utilizes Meditech to create site batches for specimen transport/order entry into Quest system.
Retrieves specimens from the Laboratory Automated Specimen Transport Line.
Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.
Qualifications
Minimum Education/Experience Required:
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent required
Minimum of 1 year hospital phlebotomy experience preferred
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required - will obtain during hospital orientation
Maintains compliance in RQI required.

Summary:
The Senior Pathologists' Assistants are academically and practically trained to provide accurate and timely processing of a variety of laboratory specimens, including comprehensive macroscopic examination and evaluation of all surgical pathological specimens. The Senior PA is responsible for case accessioning (when needed), gross description and sampling of tissue specimens at all levels of complexity, evisceration and prosection of autopsies, compilation and dictation of preliminary autopsy diagnosis, preparation and collection of tissue for special studies, evaluation of and sampling of tissues at time of frozen section, cutting, staining and cover slipping of frozen section tissue, photographing of surgical autopsy cases, opening/selection of tissue for The Cooperative Human Tissue Network (CHTN), maintaining supplies of gross room/morgue, disposal of old specimens (when necessary), identification of and resolution of labeling/identification discrepancies, assisting other gross room staff (when appropriate), assistance with procedural writing and updates (when appropriate). All of the above is done with a degree of supervision needed for each activity. The supervision level is determined by the Pathologists' Assistant Supervisor or the Pathologist in charge of the gross room.
Responsibilities And Duties:
80% Evaluation and gross dissection of all specimens at all complexity levels.
Accurately complete the gross evaluation of all surgical specimens including the most complex non-cancer and cancer cases. This necessitates proper description/dictation, identification, sectioning and cosseting of the specimen. The specific scope will be as expansive as skill and knowledge allows.
5% Assistance in gross room frozen section preparation.
Under direct or indirect Pathologist supervision, evaluate and select tissue for frozen section diagnosis. If necessary, perform all functions of the slide preparation including tissue freezing, cutting, staining, and cover slipping. Preparation of and staining alcohol/air-dried touch preps is also necessary. Process special study tissue i.e. ER/PR, Lymphoma, Chromosome analysis when needed. Must be able to keep simultaneous frozen section specimens on different patients and/or same patient with multiple sites separated, properly identified, organized, and labeled.
5% Autopsy Performance
Perform identification and external examination of autopsy case. Perform the evisceration and prosection of autopsy cases. Dictate gross findings and prepare preliminary autopsy diagnosis. Eviscreation includes organ/organ block removal, weighing of selected organs and the further dissection of the tissue. Prosection includes the selection of tissue for microscopic examination and the dictation of the gross findings. Closing the body cavities and cleaning of the autopsy suite is also required (when necessary). The cleaning is to follow the established safety and infection control procedures.
5% Maintenance of Gross Room
Ensure that all instruments are sharp and that work stations are well-stocked. Maintain all machines in an excellent working manner. Keep supply inventory at an optimum level and order supplies when needed. Ensure that the general cleanliness of the gross room is preserved in an excellent manner.
5% Perform miscellaneous assigned tasks
This includes but is not limited to the photographing of surgical specimens, assisting Supervising Senior PA in meeting CAP standards, the disposal of tissue, observance of all safety precautions, computer knowledge, file correlation, troubleshooting, accessioning, and the preparation of conference case material.
