This position will serve at our **Columbus, OH** and **West Jefferson, OH** locations. Battelle's Life Science Research is seeking a full-time technician to work in Pathology to perform necropsy procedures on small and large animal, to trim tissues for histopathology process and generate data for various types of studies. This position is Monday through Friday and will require overtime at nights, weekends and to be on call; schedule also includes holidays. **Responsibilities** + **TECHNICAL:** + The primary role is to perform necropsy examinations of small and large laboratory animals; to include gross necropsy, tissue collection, fixation, and labeling of specimens. + Work with highly hazardous biological/toxic materials in Biological Safety Level 2 (BSL-2) and Biological Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratories. + Process tissues for the histopathology team following established SOPs and safety protocols; cross-train in histology (e.g., embedding, sectioning, staining) to assist histology workflows to provide flexible coverage. + Contributing to the development and validation of equipment and necropsy activities. + Understanding and performing dilutions including mathematical calculations involved. + Contributing to the development and validation of equipment and decontaminating equipment and materials. + **EQUIPMENT/LAB:** + Act as lab technical point of contact. + Laboratory cleaning and upkeep of equipment and space. + Inventory, ordering and receipt of supplies. + Waste management, operation of autoclaves, preparation of bleach and other decontamination solutions. + Use proper technique to operate necessary equipment to produce high quality data. + Perform routine maintenance and/or calibration of equipment as necessary. Prepare and submit study files and forms to Quality Control or Quality Assurance. + Recognize when technical operations deviate from accepted practices and prepare deviation reports as needed. Report observations/problems clearly and concisely, recognizing and highlighting specific deviations. + Adhere to all laboratory safety requirements. + **LEADERSHIP/TEAMWORK:** + Participate in continuous improvement and/or other management initiatives. + May become a certified trainer, select agent custodian, and/or certified shipper. + Train and guide staff on specific tasks. + Serve as technical lead on portions of studies. + Work independently and efficiently in a team environment + **ANALYSIS/FUNCTIONAL:** + Execute moderately complex and non-standard assignments, exercising judgment to assess issues and recommend solutions; may have limited client interaction. + Apply solid technical knowledge to operate basic equipment, follow standard procedures, and troubleshooting as needed. + Perform non-routine analyses to verify the accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of project work; may assist in identifying ways to control or reduce fixed costs without impacting client expectations. + Contribute to technical planning by estimating time requirements and proposing solutions; encouraged to make recommendations but operates with limited decision-making discretion. + Complete standard and non-standard tasks under close supervision; keep the supervisor regularly informed of work status. **Key Qualifications** + Associate degree in related field; 3 years of applicable experience; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field. Is responsible for case accessioning; gross description and sampling of small uncomplicated tissue specimens; evisceration of autopsies; preparation and collection of tissue for special studies; cutting, staining, and cover slipping of frozen section tissue; maintaining supplies of gross room/morgue; disposal of old specimens; identify and resolve labeling/identification discrepancies. **Responsibilities And Duties:** 30% Accessioning of Surgical Pathology Specimens: Accurately accession all surgical pathology specimens/case types in the AP LIS. Must be diligent with proper specimen identification and labeling. All discrepancies must be addressed in a timely and professional manner with all health care personnel to ensure optimal patient care. 25% Evaluation and Gross Dissection of Small Specimens: Accurately complete the gross evaluation of small uncomplicated surgical specimens. This necessitates proper description/dictation, identification, and cassetting of the specimen. 15% Assistance in Gross Room Frozen Section Preparation : Assist Pathologist in the evaluation and selection of tissue at time of frozen section. Perform all functions of the slide preparation including tissue freezing, cutting, staining, and cover slipping. Preparation of the staining alcohol/air-dried touch preps. Process special study tissue i.e., ER/PR, Lymphoma, Chromosome analysis when needed. Must be able to keep simultaneous frozen section specimens on different patients and/or same patient with multiple sites separated, properly identified, labeled, and organized. 10% Autopsy Performance: Identify and prepare the body for autopsy. Perform the evisceration of autopsy cases. Evisceration includes organ/organ block removal, weighing of selected organs. Closing of the body cavities and cleaning of the autopsy suite. The cleaning is to follow the established safety and infection control procedures. 10% Maintenance of Gross Room: Ensure that all instruments are sharp and that workstations are well stocked. Maintain all machines in an excellent working manner. Keep supply inventory at an optimum level and order supplies when needed.
