Department:ICE | NRSL Med Oncology H7 IP C Department's Website: Summary of Job Duties:This position is used to fill multiple Day Shift positions Full-time only The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs patient care tasks and duties which do not require a license. The PCT is a trained member of the unit based team who supports the on-going delivery of care as identified by the multidisciplinary patient management team in H7 Medical Oncology Unit. H7 Medical Oncology Unit has 30 private rooms and provides state of the art therapies to a wide range of medical oncology patients and family medicine patients. Practicing in this environment allows the RN to develop skills in chemotherapy and biotherapy administration, management of a range of IV central access devices, management of a variety of symptoms associated with the disease process and/or treatment, and development of skills in emotional support and palliative care. This area also provides learning opportunities in all areas of medical-surgical nursing. A strong interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, and social workers support the patient in their various therapies. Qualifications: Required: High School Diploma/GED. Successful completion of patient care technician course within 3 months of hire. Must have excellent communication skills, ability to follow oral instructions, basic computer skills, strong work ethics and accountability. Must be able to lift 100 lbs. to waist height. Preferred: Certification as a nursing assistant or military corpsman Patient care experience in acute care setting. Prior PCT experience. The Patient Care Technician (PCT) works under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse(s) and performs tasks and duties which do not require a license, professional judgment or intervention. The PCT must pass the required competencies. The PCT works within the Department of Nursing standards. The PCT adheres to UAMS clinical programs, policies, procedures and standards and guest care guidelines. Responsibilities: Obtains patient report and has on-going communication with R.N. regarding patient care/changes in condition; Informs nurse of patient requests or complaints. Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients. Transports patients to other areas of the hospital as directed. Carries out the Plan of Care for Patient using a Multidisciplinary Approach as Delegated by Team Leader. Communicates effectively with other team members to facilitate patient care. Accepts directions from R.N.s and team members. Follows through on delegated patient care activities. Provides appropriate grooming/oral hygiene and comfort measures and assists patients with activities (ambulation, up in chair, turn and reposition). Documents all patient care activities/tasks, vital signs, ADL, wave tests, I&O's accurately and timely and per unit and department standards. Assists patients and visitors with information and/or solutions to problems. Serves as resources person to support department members in performance of duties. Notifies appropriate staff members of problems requiring prompt intervention. May perform other duties as assigned. Under the supervision of a registered nurse, performs delegated tasks and procedures of patient care, involving the physical, psychological, social, emotional, safety and security needs of the patient. Reports to: Nurse Coordinator Essential Job Functions Assists in preparing unit, patients' rooms, and patient beds for receiving patient admission or returning surgical patient according to established department policies. Maintains bed and room in a clean, neat, and comfortable manner, removing supplies and equipment not in use, placing furnishings and equipment out of the path to provide a safe, neatly organized area. Performs delegated procedures including obtaining and recording vital signs; measures and records intake and outputs and records weights, collects required specimens; and additional special procedures as directed. Reports any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient to appropriate nursing personnel. Documents care given to patients on appropriate charting forms. Responds to patients' and family calls and requests within five (5) minutes. Describes and/or explains activities and aspects of care to be performed to the patient and family. Reports patient and family concerns to the RN. Refers questions requiring advanced knowledge to the RN. Assists with preoperative and postoperative care, such as positioning patient, lifting and turning patient with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment as necessary and ambulating the patient as directed. Certification, Licensure: Current CPR certification; certification as a Nursing Assistant preferred. Experience, Training, Knowledge: Prefer one (1) year experience in a hospital setting, but not required. Physical Requirements Requires lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to fifty (50) pounds; stooping, kneeling, and/or crouching; standing and walking more than 5 hours per day; visual acuity in order to correctly distinguish skin tone variations, evidence of IV infiltration, infection, also to read telemetry, blood pressure gauges, etc.; audio acuity, in order to correctly distinguish various body sounds, i.e. respiration's, heart sounds, bowel sounds, also to discern sounds made by various types of machinery or equipment which would indicate dangerous or improper operation. Working Conditions/Environmental Exposures Environmental hazards such as chemicals, solvents, needles, needle containers, sharps, blood, body fluids, various infectious/communicable diseases, infectious medical waste, radiation, and/or radioactive materials and/or radioactive waste, proximity to moving mechanical parts.
