PatientCare Technician - Cardiology Unit, Providence Portland Medical Center in Portland, Oregon
This program is ideal for candidates who are looking to begin a career as a Certified Nursing Assistant. Providence will hire you as a PatientCare Tech. While in this role, we will pay for your coursework, and fees to become a CNA. We also pay you an hourly wage in your role as a PatientCare Tech, while attending the courses! You will earn to learn !
This is a full time position, requiring year-round availability. This posting represents a full time, night shift position. Every other weekend availability is required. If selected for this position, you will be required to attend a full time CNA training program for 3-4 weeks. When downtime occurs, you will be scheduled to work as a PatientCare Technician to fulfill full-time work hours. We are NOT offering scheduling flexibility. Scheduling will be discussed at time of interview. You must have reliable transportation and reliable phone service (cell or land line).
After obtaining a CNA license, in exchange for Providence paying program tuition and fees, you will be required to transition into a full-time CNA position within Providence St. Vincent Medical Center and remain in that position for a minimum of one year. Providence Portland Earn to Learn Program:
We provide 4 -6 weeks of orientation with an established Providence Portland Medical Center CNA or PCT with focus on the skills listed below:
PCT duties (after on-the-job training):
1:1 patient observation for suicide prevention, elopement, or prevention of medical device dislodgement
Hygiene care: bathing, brushing teeth, toileting, urinary and fecal incontinence care
Bladder scanning
Walking patients
Vital Signs (temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation measurements)
Assistant with feeding
Participate in Basic Life Saving (BLS) interventions
CNA Education:
You will be paired up with our CNA school liaison who will guide you through registering for CNA school, and signing up for your testing and licensing.
CNA duties (after licensing):
All of the above and:
Blood glucose monitoring
Removal of urinary catheter
Removal of peripheral IV catheter
Measure orthostatic blood pressures
Obtain specimens for testing (sputum, stool, urine)
Indwelling urinary catheter care
Apply compression stockings
Works closely with all members of the team to provide direct patientcare to optimize positive patientcare outcomes. Works independently and assists the registered nurse/nurse practitioner during clinic visits by providing the appropriate procedures.

Representative Functions or Duties: Practice standards of performance: Pre-operative. Performs pre-operative assessment and evaluation. Collaborates with the surgical team on plan of care. Intra-operative: Provides knowledge based technical assistance to the surgeon during the operative procedure according to AORN standards, licensure, state regulation and facility/practice protocols, including: Using instruments and medical devices. Providing surgical exposure. Handling and/or cutting tissue. Providing hemostatis, clamp, cut, and ligate tissue as directed by the surgeon. Suturing as directed by the surgeon. Post-Operative. Evaluates the patient post-operatively according to facility protocols.

Communicates with patient, family and other staff in a professional and courteous manner. Obtains and demonstrates the skills and knowledge needed to provide appropriate population based and culturally sensitive care to patients and families through education, training and experience. Practice standards of performance: Function as an assistant in all surgical specialties at the direction of the attending surgeon. Performs RNFA responsibilities in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Oregon, institutional policies and procedures of Kaiser Permanente and the AORN Position Statement on RN First Assistants. Practice within limitations of preparation and experience. Demonstrate RNFA specific clinical skills. Review and update skills checklist on an ongoing basis as specified by policies of Kaiser Permanente. Intra operative nursing behaviors include: handling tissue, providing exposure, using instruments, clamp, cut, and legate as directed by the surgeon, providing homeostasis, suturing as directed by the surgeon. Assists with room preparation in collaboration with the Circulating Nurse and scrub person. Brings patient X-rays into room NOTE: Notifies Charge Nurse or designee if films are not available. Assists in patient transport to the operating room and patient transfer to the operating room table. Provides assistance to Anesthesia during induction. Essential Functions: Provides basic nursing care needs to assigned patients and makes visual observations reporting abnormalities in accordance with established nursing procedures & policies; documents patient observation and direct care information to patients medical records. Make rounds on assigned patients at least every two hours, observing and reporting changes to the RN. Use the multidisciplinary plan of care as a guide for individualized patientcare & teaching as directed by the RN. Identify discharge barriers & communicate to RN. Assist with or provide activities of daily living (ADLs) including baths, linen change of occupied & unoccupied bed, dressing, feeding, providing water, grooming & home hygiene, AM & HS care, mouth/foley/peri-care. Perform bladder scanning, straight cath (mini-cath) in and out of adults= 18 years. Collect specimens & record specimen collection. Reinforce pulmonary hygiene including use of incentive spirometer, maintain oxygen, & connects patient to pulse oximeter. Provide nourishments; monitor& set up NG feedings, G-tube feeding or J-tube feeding for the nurse to administer. Administers minor treatments & procedures such as, but not limited to, EKG test administration, non-medicated enemas (Harris flush, soap suds), non-sterile dressing changes; sitz baths, apply ostomy appliances to old, healed sites; perform oral suctioning; safely apply heat/cooling measures; perform surgical preps; complete pre-op checklist. Perform wound cleaning and irrigation, and apply simple dressings. Apply CPM machine, sequential stocking. Perform POC testing and quality control checks. Provide bed exercises, including range of motion & positioning, & assistpatient in ambulating when necessary. For each patient, documents care provided, including but not limited to: oral intake, all output, vital signs, weights, and measurements in a concise, accurate, legible & timely manner in the medical record. Transports patients for transfer, discharge, or other needs as directed. Provide post-mortem care. Maintains prescribed standards of cleanliness & organization for assigned work areas replenishing stock supplies as necessary. Remove faulty, non-functioning equipment from service, label, & report to the appropriate personnel. Order supplies & equipment as needed. Enters equipment repair requests in EMSR. Comply with patient safety practices/policies. Comply with nursing department policies regarding patient rights and restraints. Participates in providing appropriate emergency procedures as indicated. Respond to codes & other life-threatening situations as appropriate or directed. Demonstrate understanding of assigned role in external/internal disasters. Participate in emergency drills & mock codes. Utilizes house-wide computer to input pending & actual discharge (within 10 minutes of patient departure). Skills assessments & validations are utilized to ensure that employees providing patientcare to specific age groups (i.e. infants, adolescents, elderly, etc.) are proficient identifying the special needs & behaviors associated with a particular patient population. Responds to patient alarms, i.e. bed alarms, telemetry alarms, etc. Maintains effective communication and collaboration with physician, staff, and responsible nurse. Maintains current knowledge and competency in rhythm and dysrhythmia identification. Compiles and records data for patient record and unit purposes. Notify nurse of any change regarding arrhythmia changes and pertinent cardiac events. Completes other tasks as assigned by the RN or supervisor.
Qualifications Basic Qualifications: Experience
Six (6) months of work experience in a healthcare setting.
Successful completion of a basic arrhythmia recognition competency course no more than two (2) years prior to hiring date, and/or successful completion of an equivalent EKG arrhythmia test upon hire, and annually thereafter.
Education

This team also participate in Massive Transfusion Protocols (MTP), transporting vital blood products and labs in an expedient and dependable manner.
Function/Duties of Position
* Rounds regularly, 3 times per 8 hour shift, to inpatient ICU floors. Collaborates with clinical staff to assess patient needs before each task (lift or reposition), including type of lift to be performed, condition of patient, and state of patient's physical disability. Performs patient transfers or repositioning using the appropriate lifting and transfer equipment. Identifies availability of necessary equipment and supplies for use in transfer or reposition.
* Responds to patient falls and urgent situations in an expedited manner (in less than 10 minutes). Collaborates with clinical staff to assess patient needs before lift or transfer. Identifies availability of necessary equipment and supplies for use in lift or transfer, using patient retrieval systems, such as HoverMatt or HoverJack, when necessary.
* Responds to requests for patient lifts or transfer from on-site and off-site (CHH and Dental School only) clinics (in less than 20 minutes). Collaborates, if possible, with clinical staff on scheduling prior to patient appointment. Responds to requests via Vocera, pagers or through the Transportation Dispatch.
* Participates in MTP's on the highest priority basis. Responds promptly to the Transportation Dispatchers directives. Maintains continual communication with dispatcher using Vocera and face-to-face communication with MTP clinical personnel. To ensure timeliness of this service, the following must be observed: use of elevators is not permissible and the first response must occur within 30 seconds of pager notification.
* Transports patients using wheelchair, stretcher, hospital bed, and morgue cart to and from various locations include, but not limited to: nursing units, diagnostics, pre-op, life flight pad and morgue. Transfer patients to and from stretcher, hospital bed, exam table and wheelchair using transportation-assist devices such as Hovermatts, Slipps, slider boards and backboards.
* Transports medical equipment, mail, labs, blood products and supplies to and from various locations within the OHSU environment. These locations are, but not limited to: nursing units, diagnostic areas, clinics, exam rooms, operating rooms, laboratories, morgue or offices.
