This will be accomplished by the UAP completing a South Dakota Board of Nursing approved Medication Course and by the origination of this policy. The licensed nurse will provide education for the first-time medication being given prior to giving the medication, including possible side effects. This information will be shared with the UAP by telephone or in person. The UAP shall look for any documentation of allergies for the resident who is to receive the first-time given medication. The UAP shall also look for any documentation of side effects or drug interactions for the medication to be given. These issues shall be discussed with the facility nurse prior to the UAP giving the first dose of any new medication to a resident. The UAP shall document on the back of the MAR when he/she talked to the nurse in regards to first dose with note stating: “ Date/Time First dose instructions for medication name given to staff by nurse name . When nurse is on campus, she will review order, verify first dose note and sign off on MAR.
