Maintain supplies, clean rooms and equipment, and stock exam rooms

Maintain and operate all medical devices and equipment, including calibration and record keeping
Notify supervisor immediately if equipment is not functioning properly, supplies are needed, or facility is not operating as expected

Draws blood samples on adults; reviews collection kit to ensure all required information is present; determines types of specimens to be collected and if proper patient preparation has been accomplished; selects appropriate venipuncture site and cleans to ensure contamination-free field, taking into account any adverse reaction to cleaning solutions if indicated by Soldier/civilian or medical personnel.
Performs routine and complicated venipuncture. Applies sterile dressing to site and instructs donors on care required to prevent infection and/or bruising. Provides immediate care to donors who may faint or become nauseous during the procedure. Collects specimens into appropriate anticoagulant, preservative or clot tubes as required by test requested.
Performs and documents results of waived Point of Care Testing in the Vitals Section. Performs quality control and routine maintenance according to local Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Labels specimens in accordance with the SOP. Follows all regulatory regulations (e.g., Food and Drug Administration, AABB and College of American Pathologists) and safety guidelines for sample shipment and handling of all specimens. Follows infection control regulations in handling, storage, packaging, and disposal of biohazard materials. Determines the specimen(s) to be collected for the laboratory work to be performed based on the laboratory requisition or clinical orders entered in the hospital information system. Must be able to explain the procedure for collection of specimens to the donor.
Determines by SOPs and other guides how specimens must be processed and stored. Operates centrifuge to separate specimens. Refrigerates, store at room temperature, or freezes specimens as required. Maintains strict confidentiality of all testing results.
Process whole blood units into components. Strips, segments, weighs, and stores whole blood units. Records information, such as the time of started and stopped drawing blood. Manufactures packed red blood cells, platelets, fresh frozen plasma, and recovered plasma in accordance with SOP.
Initiate human volunteer apheresis procedure. Takes donor history, temperature, pulse, blood pressure, hemoglobin, and initiate collection of single donor plasma and single donor platelets using apheresis equipment and standard procedures.
Instructs and monitors various phlebotomy personnel or students on rotation in phlebotomy techniques. Areas of concerns include patient identification, site selection, site preparation, blood collection, specimen labeling, patient care, blood handling techniques and emergency treatment of adverse phlebotomy reactions. Orders appropriate laboratory testing required in MHS Genesis, maintains supplies and equipment, maintains adequate supplies in patient care areas, monitors stock levels and expiration dates of available collection tubes and replenishing, when required. Cleans and wipes equipment, monitors supplies and pulls outdated stock. Assembles equipment, verifies correct instrument operation and reports defects.
Receives donors, visitors and answers telephone calls. Determines nature of inquiry. Directs the inquiry to the appropriate section. Takes and relays messages. Always maintains cleanliness and orderliness of the section.
Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school equivalent and completion of a Phlebotomy program accredited by Joint Commission or CAP.ACLS/BLS certifications current throughout the life of the contract. Certification refers to the successful completion of an American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN) approved BLS or ACLS course. The AHA and MTN are the only programs acceptable by VA for obtaining required certification.
Must have performed 50 successful donor collections with an accredited laboratory within the last two (2) years.
Certification/registration as a Phlebotomy Technician, Donor Phlebotomy Technician or equivalent by the American Society for Clinical Pathology, American Medical Technologists or other agency approved by the Assistant Secretary Defense (Health Affairs), ASD(HA).
Must be a US Citizen.
