The Surgical Technologist is responsible for aseptic technique, setting up the required equipment, instrumentation and sterile supplies as needed for their assigned cases; scrubbing and passing instruments and equipment during surgical procedures; pulling cases as needed, breaking down cases at the end of the procedure, sets up operating room and supplies needed for day/following day's schedule. Available for call on an assigned scheduled basis as required by unit need. Perform other duties as assigned.

SUMMARY
The Surgical Technologist demonstrates basic knowledge and skills in the scrub role, necessary to provide assistance during surgical procedures performed in the department.
Education:
Required: Graduate of a CAAHEP accredited surgical technology program.
Preferred: Associate degree.
Experience:

Certifications:
Required: BLS, Surgical Technologist certification.

Summary
Provides direct and indirect technical care to surgical/obstetric patients along the continuum of the age spectrum facilitating the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. The Health Technician is responsible for a wide variety of duties that requires the ability to interact with patients, physicians, nurses, Diagnostic Radiologic Technologists, Imaging Technologists, Radiology Residents and Fellowship Physicians, as well as multiple ancillary hospital personnel and services.
Key Responsibilities:
Required to set up radiographic suites and assure that sterile supplies, contrast materials, catheters, and other required equipment and supplies are present and available.
Receive patients, explain method of procedure(s), position patients, select and set technical factors, set up and adjust accessory equipment, and make and develop exposures.
Prepare and administer contrast material orally, by enema, or intravenously under close supervision of a radiologist(s), but not independently.
Contract personnel will also perform related clerical duties such as sending images to the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), archiving images, post processing images, and case editing of computer requests and reports.
Maintain records and enter patient information using the Radiology VistA Package, and the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
Function effectively as a vital member of the Imaging Service team when cooperative efforts are needed to complete patient procedures and provide a high level of patient satisfaction and safety for patients and team members.
Completes required organizational compliance education, including assigned requirements that are client-specified, for Joint Commission Healthcare Staffing Services certification or other regulatory bodies.

Job Duties:Collects, reports, and documents data.
Takes vital signs, height and weight, intake and output, pulse oximetry, and collects specimens.

Provides for patients' personal hygiene.
Bathes patients, performs oral suctioning, superficial wound care, assists with elimination, and cares for the incontinent patient and the patient with a urinary catheter.
Assists or gives cleansing enemas, sitz baths, non-sterile douches, and provides ostomy care.
Assists with feeding.
Ambulates, positions, and turns patients and cares for the patient with altered mobility.
Assists with the admission, transfer, and discharge of the patient.
Assists the healthcare team by preparing patients and chaperoning during examinations/procedures or assists with other patient treatments.
Provides for patient safety related to age and condition.
Assists with patient restraints and maintains patient-specific safety precautions.
Collects, reports, and documents data related to patient needs/emergencies and unusual patient and family behavior.
Cares for the patient from a correctional environment.
Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality of information and health records at all times.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
· High school diploma or equivalent
· Two (2) years of experience in a direct patient care environment including acute patient care, nursing home, or LTAC experience within the last two years OR
· Current enrollment in a recognized School of Nursing with completion of first semester of education which contains clinical concepts and health assessment or the equivalent.
o Must not be in final semester of nursing program.
o Must provide college transcript and letter of recommendation from current nursing instructor
· Must have current BLS certification issued thru American Heart Association.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/EQUIPMENT:
Standard Hospital Environment. Uses standard patient care supplies, equipment and mechanical devices.
