The Mental Health Technician, Supervisor is a permanent, full-time position with the Department of Mental Health. Positions are located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. This is supervisory work in the therapeutic care, habilitation, and rehabilitation of the persons with a mental illness. Employees in this class plan and coordinate the work of a staff of subordinate workers in the general treatment, and care of persons with mental illness in a unit, ward, or cottage setting.

Job Description DEFINITION: This is responsible, position that provides supervision and care to seriously mentally ill consumers in either the temporary observation unit or the extended observation unit at the Carastar Crisis Center DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: Monitor consumers in matters of grooming, money management, discipline, and social activities. Conduct and document on periodic checks of consumers and facilities as assigned by program supervisor. Conduct Basic Living Skill trainings in individual and group sessions. Document all billable services, shift notes, and other significant interactions in electronic health record. Ensure consumers sign for any billed services. Assist in the arrangement for proper emergency medical care of residents when needed. Routinely monitor and ensure facility safety and upkeep, assuring a suitable environment for residents. Assist in de-escalation of consumers utilizing appropriate CPI techniques and documenting. Perform basic housekeeping functions in all areas of the program. Complete routine maintenance chores and see that equipment is maintained and in good working order. Prepare meals following the program menu and document according to Food Bank and agency policies and procedures. Observe the behavior, attitudes and physical condition of residents and report significant changes. Transport and/or escort residents to appointments or activities as needed. Complete Carastar reports and documentation as assigned. Participate in training activities as required to enhance skills needed to work with the seriously mentally ill. Monitor and comply with established procedures for accidents, fires, or other emergencies. Ensure compliance with facility rules. Complete reports and paperwork as assigned. Cover other Carastar programs and locations as assigned by supervisor. Administer medications if required and document on MAR and in Electronic Health Record. REQUIREMENTS: Knowledge of behavioral patterns and problems of the mentally ill. Ability to develop skills necessary to provide basic supervision and care. Ability and physical capability to assist in the restraining of consumers acting in an out-of-control manner. Sufficient physical strength and mobility to help lift and support residents. Knowledge of housekeeping procedures and facility maintenance. Ability to effectively relate to and communicate with the seriously mentally ill. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Must be moderately proficient in computer technology and systems. Must be able to follow a menu and prepare meals. QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or equivalent, plustwo years ofexperience in supervising or providing care to individuals who are disadvantaged, emotionally or physically ill and/or behaviorally maladjusted. Must hold a valid driver's license and maintain a driving record that is acceptable to Carastar's insurance carrier. Must maintain at least liability coverage on personal vehicles. OTHER: + Perform additional duties as assigned. **ADDENDUM FOR PATIENT CARE TECHNICIANS WORKING IN THE HOME PROGRAMS (NOT HOME ASSIST):** Assisting the HT RN: + May assist HT RN on Home Visit as directed + Reinforces PD / HHD education under supervision of qualified HT RN + Schedules and contacts patients regarding appointments + Weigh patient and obtain vital signs + Collect treatment records and review for completion. Notify RN of incomplete / missing records. + Cleaning and prepping treatment room; prep charts + Preparing lab tubes and requisitions & assisting with lab draw days both pre and post draw (PCT certified phlebotomy or per state regulations) + Clerical duties as assigned (faxing, mailing to physician offices etc.) + Obtain home hemo water sampling as directed by the HT RN + Set-up of the home hemo machine and PD Cycler. + Assist with exit site care when directed by HT RN. + Warm dialysate solution when directed by the HT RN + Draw dialysate solution for testing as directed by the HT RN + Creates and sends patient reminders (supply inventory for order, Kt/V collection, bringing meds to clinic visit for review) + Assembles/breaks down charts/thins charts + Maintains logs as directed and applicable + Inventory of Home Program + Maintains par levels of home department supplies + Files home patient packing slips/invoices + Inventory for Patients + Assists patient with supply management and contacting customer service **PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:** The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee may occasionally be required to push and/or pull equipment, exerting up to 15 pounds of force. The employee may be required to lift and to lower solutions on a frequent basis of up to 30 lbs., and on an occasional lift basis up to 40 lbs., as high as 5 feet. Two years' or more nursing experience and at least one year of experience in the provision of Long-Term Care facility services in the last five (5) years. Train the Trainer Certification needed. Licenses or Certificates: ï State Teacher's Certificate preferred. Must have or acquire Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid. Must be certified, licensed, or accredited in the state in which the center is located, or is accredited by a professional trade organization as a Registered Nurse.
