The Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) supervises and provides a safe and therapeutic environment for children and adolescents admitted to RVBH Hospital. They may provide 1:1 instruction utilizing the principals of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) based upon an individualized intervention plan designed by the treatment team for children diagnosed with autism, intellectual disabilities, and emotional and behavioral disorders. They support the improvement of patient's overall physical, psychological, spiritual, and social well-being through therapeutic interactions guided by the patients' person-centered treatment plans. They assist patients in achieving desired outcomes for an overall healthier quality of life.
Essential Duties:
Second Shift opening: 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Includes every other weekend.
Assesses positive, negative, and/or potentially dangerous mood and behavior change and takes steps to modify the patient's actions or alert medical professionals.
Uses interpersonal skills and training about de-escalation to diffuse challenging situations.
Serves as a role model for the patients in all areas.
Maintains strict confidentiality of patient information.
Effectively communicates to the nursing team and team lead regarding the patient.
Teaches in the areas of communication, activities of daily living, behavior, social skills, and academics in both 1:1 and group settings to reach goals developed by SBA.
Communicates with the SBA daily for any concerns, questions, or suggestions.
Teaches the clients the type of skills required based on their individual plan.
Assists with new admissions.
Helps with daily living activities such as eating, bathing, grooming, and cleaning rooms.
Charts on assigned patients according to policy and procedure. Reports to the unit nurse any significant information regarding the shift and activities.
Plans and executes activities with assigned children and adolescents during non- scheduled times and coordinates activities with Recreation Therapy staff.
Maintains annual trainings (includes infection control and Safe Crisis Management) and follows the infection control policies by maintaining annual TB skin test.
Maintains awareness of the policies related to the prevention and transmission of infection control (hand washing) and the utilization of personal protective equipment.
Models the mission and values of RiverValley Behavioral Health.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED required.
Valid driver's license preferred.
One (1) year of direct care experience in a similar facility preferred.
Preferred experience or training in ABA and working with individuals diagnosed with autism, intellectual disabilities or emotional/behavioral disorders.
Knowledge and Skills:
Strong communication, observation and teamwork skills.
Organizational, planning and group facilitation skills.
Ability to engage youth positively.
Ability to remain calm and supportive in high-stress situations.
