Additional Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required within one (1) year of hire.
  • Prior hospital experience preferred.
  • Every other weekend is required
  • Candidates who do not possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent will be provided the opportunity to enroll in a GED/HSEA program at time of hire as a condition of employment. A hired candidate will be provided one (1) year from date of hire to successfully complete a GED program and obtain their HSEA.

The
Patient Escort

The Patient Escort is responsible for the safe and efficient escort of patients, blood products, specimens and other patient related articles.

The Patient Escort Department is typically hiring for 1st, 2nd and/or 3rd shifts and both part-time/full-time opportuities. Benefits are available to both part-time and full-time employees.


Responsibilities:


Responsible for escorting patients as assigned. Responsible for checking each patient's name band prior to escorting to ensure proper patient identification. Provide and adjust escort equipment for safety and comfort of the patient i.e. appropriate linen, side rails. Required to disinfect / wipe down equipment with approved cleaning product between patient transports. Assist patients onto escort equipment. If patients need additional help, patient care should be asked to assist. Shows ownership over escort equipment, including routine cleaning, linen dressing and minor maintenance. Responsible for notifying nursing or ancillary personnel upon arrival or departure of patients. Attends to the care of documents relating to the patient e. g. medical charts. Makes routine specimen rounds when assigned to assure that lab specimens are picked up and delivered in a timely manner. Makes certain that all requisitions are attached and those specimens are properly bagged by department staff prior to delivery to the lab. Deliver blood products when assigned. Check name and number on each blood product for accuracy. Responsible for delivering deceased patients to the morgue when assigned. Report immediately any unusual symptoms of patients i. e. fainting or shortness of breath during time of escort. Provides, moves and cares for escort equipment for the movement of patients. Must be able to speak, spell, read, write and understand English. Excellent communication skills and ability to interact well with patients of all ages. Must have good patient relations and courteous manners. Must be able to work under stress in a fast-paced environment. Must demonstrate reliability, punctuality and good attendance. This role may support additional projects, perform administrative tasks, and other duties as assigned.

Enrollment in BLS training course within 2 months of hire and successful completion within 3 months. Must be COVID vaccinated

Central Transport Service provides safe, courteous, and timely "patient centered" transport of patients, patient equipment and patient related items throughout Brigham and Women's Hospital. Escort Transporters spend most of their day managing the more challenging transport assignments, training staff, reporting and /or refering all complex or unresolved issues to the supervisors and completing general escort responsibilities.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


Transports patients in stretchers, beds or wheelchairs to the test sites for testing and back to their rooms once the test is completed. Demonstrates knowledge of hospital systems and procedures, location of all departments, treatment areas and other patient services. Transports specimens to the lab, as required and transport patients to lobby areas upon discharges.

Receive assignments via Pagers and two way phones from dispatchers or supervisors. Enter pick ups and completion of assignments in the bed system by using the telephony systems as trained

Responds to simple patient requests, communicating more complex needs to the RN. Provides supportive customer service, functioning as part of the patient care team and demonstrating appropriate behavior in interactions with staff, patients and visitors.


Uses germicidal wipes and disposable gloves to disinfect transport equipment prior to patient transport and at the completion of the assignment.

Follows infection control guidelines and safety protocols when transporting patients and patient equipment.

Follow proper safety protocol when assigned to pick up patients from the Helipad.

Transports, cleans, tags and returns to designated storage area: IV poles, monitors, wheelchairs, stretchers, pumps, scales, lift and other patient equipment as directed by supervisor

Maintains neatness and organization of work and storage areas. Collects, disinfects and stores transport and patient equipment.



Qualifications
• High School diploma or equivalent preferred.

• 1 year experience as an excort at BWH.

• Ability to speak, read, and write English.

• Ability to stand, carry, push and pull 50-80 lbs.
