Job Description

The Patient Sitter is a care giver who assists patients with activities of daily living. Individuals in this role, are also responsible for one-on-one patient watches.

Additional Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required within one (1) year of hire.
  • Prior hospital experience preferred.
  • Every other weekend is required
  • Candidates who do not possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent will be provided the opportunity to enroll in a GED/HSEA program at time of hire as a condition of employment. A hired candidate will be provided one (1) year from date of hire to successfully complete a GED program and obtain their HSEA.

General Job / Performance Information

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED with general knowledge of the hospital setting. Medical background or previous experience in a hospital environment is preferred. Previous clinical experience, direct patient care, or certification preferred but not required.

Environmental / Working Conditions

Work is inside, in well lighted conditions, protected from weather, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Hours of duty may be irregular when assistance in covering various shifts is necessary. Exposure to blood born pathogens is of medium risk.

This position requires close interaction with the medical staff, nursing staff, and ancillary departments in order to facilitate a quality multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

Job Description

Responsible for continuous observation and surveillance of assigned patients through a non-recording video monitoring system. Verbally redirects patients who exhibit risk behaviors, and summons nursing staff if the patient requires assistance. Must protect patient and institutional confidentiality at all times, and must follow all related hospital and departmental policies and procedures.

Required Licensures / Certifications / Registrations

None specific. Must complete general hospital orientation and AvaSure TeleSitter training.

Physical Capabilities

Work is mostly sedentary; visual acuity required to monitor up to 12 patients on one screen at one time. Must be able to remain alert at all times while on duty. Talking and hearing are essential for communicating with patients and nursing staff. Must be able to verbally communicate using a microphone and headset.

Skills and Abilities

Basic computer skills and basic Microsoft Window skills are necessary. Must be efficient at multitasking and must be able to demonstrate the ability to prioritize simultaneous situations. Must demonstrate discretion, courtesy, and respect when working with patients, visitors, and staff.
