Summary –
The Police Sergeant, under the general direction of the Chief of Police, is responsible for the field supervision of all departmental police officers under his rank. The Police Sergeant is also responsible for assisting the Police Chief with the general administration of the Police Department. This position suitable for transitional duty.

Job Requirement

Under general supervision of the Deputy Chief of Police / Police Patrol Sergeant is a supervisory officer and will be responsible for the efficient and effective utilization of public safety personnel assigned to the shift, for supervising and participating in police patrol and regulatory activities and for performing generalized duties in the department. The Patrol Sergeant will have authority over all police officers and civilians assigned to him/her in the direction and supervision of their duties. The Patrol Sergeant will have the authority to handle and dispose of urgent and minor matters. The Patrol Sergeant will keep the Deputy Chief of Police abreast of all matters requiring urgent actions and emergency matters.
* The Police Patrol Sergeant duties include but are not limited to the following:

* Assume the duties of the watch commander and as such shall have the authority commensurate with the position.
* Maintain duty schedule for police and security officers assigned on various shifts. Responsible for staffing shift vacancies.
* Staff and manage special events such as graduation and sporting events.
* Participate in Community Policing activities and assignments.
* Approve time off request for police and security officers on all shifts.
* Ensure that police and security on their assigned shift have completed all required training.
* Evaluate police and security personnel assigned to all three shifts.
* Conduct roll call, assign daily beat assignments, conduct inspections of personnel and ensure that personnel have the proper equipment to do their job effectively and efficiently.
* Have a working knowledge of department rules, regulations, general orders, pertinent federal, state or local laws and policies.
* Advise personnel of changes in policy, procedures, and laws.
* Prepare reports, forms and other material as required, ensure proper disposition of all paperwork generated, and assist officers in proper arrest and booking procedures.
* Review reports of subordinates for accuracy and completeness.
* Maintains and enforces departmental rules and regulations.
* Initiate and conduct investigations on complaints and/or allegations received/observed on department members according to department or university guidelines.

* Ensure proper appearance, conduct, performance, productivity and other actions of personnel, either assigned to him/her or coming under their scrutiny.

* Respond to the scene of any major crime, emergency or disaster, assume command until the situation is ended or until properly relieved.
* Ensure that officers respond immediately to all assignments, handle them efficiently and effectively.
* Ensure that officers engage in proactive and preventive patrol not limiting their activity to a vehicular patrol.
* Inform the Deputy Chief of crime or traffic, or other conditions at the University so that personnel can be assigned effectively.
* Ensures an effective and efficient working relationship with various university divisions, departments, outside agencies, and the public.
* Ensures proper inspection and maintenance of public safety vehicles including routine cleaning exterior/interior of all patrol vehicles.

Minimum qualifications include, but are not limited to:

* Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Police or Fire Administration, Public Administration, or related field with coursework in police or fire science, emergency management, police or fire administration, criminal justice, or law enforcement preferred.
* Candidate should possess at least five years of progressively responsible public safety and emergency management experience, as a supervisor.
* Completion of ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700 and 800.
* Must be eligible for, or possess, a valid driver's license.
* Must pass a background check that includes submitting fingerprints to the Illinois State Police and FBI. Cannot have any felony convictions, or have been convicted of domestic violence or similar crimes. Must be 21 years of age or older.
